Oasis Marigot

Private-villa living with hotel-style help is the basic idea here. Oasis Marigot is a small community of 12 private homes above Marigot Bay, with direct access to the sea, a beach and the marina. You get your own space rather than a conventional hotel room, while concierge support can help arrange cars, activities, restaurant bookings, housekeeping and other practical details.

The hotel team speaks English, so you can deal directly with the people organising your stay. The setting suits couples particularly well, especially if your preferred evening plan is a balcony, a sea view and dinner made at your own pace rather than a timetable you have to chase.

You are in Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia, on the west coast of the island. The resort sits on a hillside above the bay, with the Caribbean Sea, the marina and the palm-lined beach below. The location gives you water at the door and a central base for exploring Saint Lucia in either direction.

The access is part of the geography, not a footnote: you reach the resort by ferry from the landing point on the south side of the bay. The crossing takes about two minutes, with ferries running every ten minutes. Once across, the resort climbs the hillside, with stairs and sloping, uneven paths in places.

A few nearby places make self-catering less isolated than it might sound. Roots Beach Bar and Haddigs are close by, while Rum Cave, Pirate Bay Marigot and Juliettas give you restaurant options around the bay. Roseau Beach is about 0.7 miles away by car, and Tolonge Beach is about 4 miles away by car.

For a couple, the One-Bedroom Apartment is the straightforward choice: private, self-contained and designed for two rather than for squeezing extra bodies into a standard room. You have a kitchenette with a hob, oven, microwave, fridge, toaster, coffee machine and kitchenware, plus a dining table and a separate seating area with a sofa. That matters when you return hungry and would rather make something simple than go straight back out.

The balcony and the views do much of the visual work. Depending on the accommodation, you look towards the sea or the garden, and the private entrance gives the apartment a more independent feel than a room opening onto an internal corridor. Free WiFi is available in the rooms, and air conditioning helps you recover from heat, salt and a day spent moving between shore and boat.

A mosquito net and a fan are also provided, alongside the air conditioning. The bathroom is private, with a shower or bath, towels and a hairdryer. Ground-floor units are available, while some upper areas are reached by stairs, so the hillside layout is worth factoring in before you book.

This is a self-catering stay, not a breakfast-and-dinner package. The villas are set up for preparing your own meals, and the kitchen equipment gives you enough range to deal with more than coffee and toast. A dining area indoors and an outdoor dining area let you choose between practical and scenic, depending on how much effort remains in your legs.

Doolittle's restaurant sits at the bottom of the resort, with food and drinks beside the beach area. For a quieter meal in the villa, the fridge can be pre-stocked before your arrival, and a local cook can be arranged for authentic Creole food. There is no room service, so the useful question is whether you want the freedom to eat privately or the convenience of having every meal handled for you. Here, the former is the model.

Bars and restaurants around Marigot Bay give you alternatives when the kitchenette feels like too much work. Roots Beach Bar and Haddigs are nearby, while Rum Cave, Pirate Bay Marigot and Juliettas are also around the bay.

The shared pool for the Vacation Club Villas gives you an easy place to cool down, with shade in the late afternoon. Several of the larger villas have their own private pools, including infinity pools and pool areas with outdoor lounges; the exact arrangement depends on the villa you choose. Sun loungers and beach chairs are available, so you can make the day as active or as horizontal as required.

The waterfront keeps things simple. You can snorkel along the shore, hire kayaks and other equipment by the beach, go sailing, fish or join a boat excursion. The bay also gives you direct access to a palm-lined beach, although it is small and local sellers may approach you; using the resort’s chairs keeps you in the hotel’s own area.

Away from the water, the concierge can arrange hiking, golf, cycling, horseback riding, birdwatching and cultural outings. Planned excursions include sailing past the Pitons, Diamond Waterfall and botanical gardens, sunset cruises, zipline tours, a chocolate tour, whale watching, Castries and its market, the Friday Fish Fry Festival and a hike on the Pitons. That is a useful menu for a non-diving day, or for a travelling companion who has no interest in spending every morning in neoprene.

George F. L. Charles Airport is about 9 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly 19 minutes. Hewanorra International Airport is about 34 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly 55 minutes. An airport shuttle is available through the property, and car hire can also be arranged. The final approach is by ferry only, with a crossing of about two minutes from the south side of the bay.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 23:30, and you need to give the property your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 06:00 to 10:00. Private check-in and check-out, concierge service and grocery deliveries are available, with the latter two helping if you want to arrive with the practicalities already dealt with.

The hillside layout deserves an honest mention. There are many steps, inclined and uneven paths, and the resort is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility; a trolley or lift is available to help you up the hill. Children are not allowed, and cots and extra beds are not available. The apartment has a private bathroom, air conditioning, a mosquito net and a safety deposit box, while nearby public parking is available without reservation.
