Anse Chastanet Resort

If your idea of a resort involves sea air, open windows and a proper change of scenery rather than a polished box with identical corridors, Anse Chastanet takes a different route. The resort sits on a private 600-acre tropical estate in Soufrière, with rooms spread between the hillside and the beach, and views towards Petit and Gros Piton across the Caribbean Sea.

The design keeps the setting in the room: tropical hardwood or clay-tile floors, louvre windows, ceiling fans, balconies or patios, and furniture made locally from island woods. It is an adults-leaning address, with children aged eight and over welcome. That makes the place particularly suited to couples and divers who want the evening to slow down properly once the fins are off.

Anse Chastanet Resort is in Soufrière, Saint Lucia, on the island's south-west coast. The resort is directly beside Anse Chastanet Beach and Anse Mamin Beach, with soft Caribbean sand, loungers, towels and a beach bar close to the water. Reefs lie just offshore, and both bays sit within a designated marine reserve.

You are in a coastal, jungle and mountain setting rather than in the middle of town. Soufrière Beach is about 1.1 miles away by the direct distance shown for the area, while the Pitons Management Area is about 1.2 miles away and Piton Falls about 2.1 miles away. Apsara is about 250 feet from the resort, Jade Mountain Club about 300 feet away, and Orlando's Restaurant & Bar about 1.5 miles away by the listed road distance.

The estate is also a base for the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surroundings suit you if a short outing means a waterfall, a volcanic landscape or a plantation visit, not a shopping street outside the lobby.

The choice is mainly about where you want to wake up. Beachside rooms put you closer to the sand and the sea, while hillside rooms trade a shorter route to the water for elevated views across the Pitons, gardens or the Caribbean. The larger hillside categories make more sense if you want extra space for a third guest or simply prefer not to live out of a suitcase after a day outdoors.

Every room has a super-king-size bed, a private bathroom, a balcony or patio, louvre windows and a ceiling fan. There is also a refrigerator, kettle and coffee-making facilities, wardrobe space, a safe and a wall-mounted hairdryer. The practical result is straightforward: cold water can wait in the fridge, the fan keeps the night moving, and the room gives you somewhere to sit without turning the bed into your only piece of furniture.

The setting does bring a physical consideration. Around 100 steps lead from beach level to the middle hillside, although a complimentary shuttle runs between the beach and hillside levels. If walking is difficult or you have heart problems, the beach-level rooms are the sensible starting point for your choice. Deluxe and Premium rooms also have an iron and ironing board, useful if your luggage contains more than dive kit and a change of clothes.

Three restaurants cover the main meals, with Caribbean, international, modern Caribbean and Indo-East Indian-Saint Lucian cooking among the styles on offer. The menus change daily and use local produce, including organic ingredients grown at Emerald Estate, the resort's own farm. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are part of the offer rather than an afterthought.

Breakfast is included and comes as a buffet with continental, Full English and Irish, American, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and kosher choices. That gives you a practical range before a morning in the water, although no breakfast timetable is provided here, so early departure plans deserve checking before you book.

There are two named bars at the resort, including the Beach Bar, which specialises in rums, and Jungle Grill and Bar at Anse Mamin. Sunday brings a Saint Lucian rum mixology class at the beach bar. Cooking classes and a chocolate laboratory add something to do between meals, while special-diet menus are available on request. The board basis is half board, so you should check exactly which meals are included in your chosen arrangement.

The two beaches do much of the work here. You can settle on a lounger, snorkel straight from the coast, or take to the water by kayak, paddleboard, Sunfish sailboat, windsurf board or sailboat. Boat excursions are also available, and equipment can be hired on site. There is no need to manufacture a packed itinerary when the beach is already at the bottom of the property.

For firmer ground, the estate offers cycling, hiking and jungle biking, with 12 miles of trails through the Anse Mamin valley. The routes pass historic sites and support birdwatching, while guided property tours, art classes and excursions to the volcano, sulphur springs, Diamond mineral baths and a former French colonial plantation give you several ways to spend a non-diving day.

Kai Belté Spa sits at beach level between the beach restaurant and the dive centre. Its treatments include massage, facials, aromatherapy, reflexology, Swedish massage, deep-tissue work, shiatsu and Thai foot massage, with five air-conditioned treatment rooms, an outdoor hair and nail salon, and the open-air Kai Mer cabin overlooking Anse Chastanet reef. Daily morning and evening yoga takes place in the beach gazebo, and the resort also has a fitness centre and tennis court.

Hewanorra International Airport is about 60 minutes away by taxi, while George F. L. Charles Airport takes about 75 minutes by taxi. Airport transfers are available by taxi or helicopter, and the resort has a private helipad. Car hire, a tour desk, concierge service, currency exchange, luggage storage and a 24-hour front desk are available, which helps when the route from airport to coast is part of the holiday rather than a minor detail.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to midnight, and check-out is by 12:00. Early arrival and late departure can be requested. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, private parking is available on site, and packed lunches can be arranged. The property has a boutique, two beachside shops and an art gallery. Cash is accepted, along with American Express, Visa, Mastercard and cheques.

The hillside layout is worth taking seriously: the shuttle removes much of the climbing between beach and hill, but the steps remain part of the terrain. Children aged eight and over are welcome, with extra beds available for older children subject to the selected room and availability. Pets are not allowed.

The resort's environmental approach is built into the estate and the food on your plate. Emerald Estate grows organic produce for the resort's organic and vegan cooking, while local ingredients and local woods are used in the rooms' furniture and decoration.

The property faces two bays within a designated marine reserve, with coral reefs just offshore. Its conservation work includes a coral nursery operated through the on-site diving operation. For you, that places the reef, the menu and the materials used around the resort within the same practical story: the surrounding landscape is not just decoration, it is part of how the place operates.
