The Scuba Shop SXM

Located in Cul-de-Sac, Sint Maarten, The Scuba Shop SXM has been a fixture of the local diving scene since 1993. What began as a small shop has grown into the largest dive and service centre in the Windward and Leeward Islands. The centre is owned and operated by Peter and Kim Frye, bringing decades of technical expertise to the Simpson Bay area.

The shop serves a wide range of divers, from those arriving on cruise ships to private travellers and yacht charters. Beyond standard recreational diving, the centre is a dedicated PADI ECO Center, integrating marine conservation into its core operations. This commitment is reflected in their involvement with local reef restoration and citizen science projects.

As a PADI 5-Star Dive and ECO Center, the shop provides a structured and professional environment for both training and exploration. The team is deeply involved in environmental initiatives, including PADI Dive Against Debris and Shark and Ray Conservation Surveys.

The centre offers a high level of personalised attention, particularly for those starting their journey. For Discover Scuba Diving participants, the centre maintains a ratio of maximum two divers per instructor to ensure safety and guidance.

The centre provides a complete progression of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving before moving through the Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver courses. For those looking to turn their passion into a career, the Divemaster programme is available.

Specialised training is also a core part of their curriculum. You can enrol in courses such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck Diver, Drift Diver, Boat Diver, and Self-reliant Diver. They also offer niche specialties including Full Face Mask Diver, Underwater Digital Imaging, and the PADI Mermaid Program.

Conservation-focused training is integrated into their educational offerings. This includes PADI AWARE Specialty courses, Coral Reef Conservation, and AWARE Shark & Ray Conservation.

The Mermaid's Tale is a semi-rigid inflatable centre console powered by a 600 hp motor. This boat is configured to carry a maximum of 8 divers, ensuring a more intimate experience on the water.

On board, you will find filtered water and light snacks to keep you refreshed between dives. The vessel is equipped to handle morning, afternoon, and night dive trips, providing access to a variety of sites across the island.

They also provide professional air quality testing for compressed breathing air. For those needing kit, they offer full rental sets, as well as individual items like masks, snorkels, fins, and wetsuits.

On-site, divers can access a swimming pool for training purposes. The shop also serves as the authorised SEABOB dealer and service station for the Caribbean. For local divers, a tank exchange service is available with four hours' notice.

The reefs around Sint Maarten are teeming with life, from large pelagics to intricate macro species. You will frequently encounter Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays patrolling the sandy bottoms and reef edges. Schools of barracuda, jacks, and various snapper species, such as yellowtail snappers, add constant movement to the water column.

For those interested in the smaller details, the sites offer plenty of macro life. Look for octopus, various moray eels, including green and spotted varieties, and several species of blennies. You may also spot colourful critters like sea slugs, trumpetfish, and various types of shrimp tucked into the reef structure.

The hard coral landscape is a vital part of the ecosystem, featuring extensive formations of elkhorn coral and staghorn coral. These are complemented by a variety of sponges, anemones, and colourful soft corals that provide habitat for species like the queen angelfish, french angelfish, and various damselfish. You might also find sea turtles, including hawksbill turtles, grazing near the reef flats.

Diving in the area is conducted via boat trips, with scheduled departures in the morning and afternoon. The centre also operates night dives, allowing for a completely different perspective on the local marine life.
