Capo Calavà is a holiday park resort on Sicily’s northern coast, built around a private pebbly beach, a swimming pool, sports facilities and a full all-inclusive programme.

This is an address for divers who may not be travelling alone. Families have plenty to occupy them, while couples get the sea, the views and enough on-site activity to avoid turning every non-diving hour into a hunt for somewhere open. The atmosphere is organised and lively, with entertainment staff, evening shows and live music rather than a whispering retreat where even the cutlery feels guilty for making a noise.

You are in Gioiosa Marea, in the municipality’s Capo Calavà area on Sicily’s north coast. The resort sits directly on the shore, with its own private beach and views across to the Aeolian Islands. Gioiosa Marea is about 1.2 miles away, while Patti is roughly 6.2 miles from the property.

The immediate setting is coastal, with mature olive trees and the Capo Calavà promontory around the resort. Capo Calavà Beach is about 500 feet away by road, and Spiaggia Acquamarina is around 2.2 miles away. For a change of scenery, Parco Suburbano di Scafa is about 12 miles away, and the railway station at Gioiosa Marea is roughly 2.2 miles by road.

You can reach the resort by car from the A20 Messina–Palermo motorway, leaving at Patti and continuing along the SS113 towards Palermo. Catania Airport is about 112 miles away and Palermo Airport about 118 miles away, so this is a destination where arranging the arrival properly is worth more than winging it with a tired sat-nav.

The rooms are set up for straightforward holiday living rather than extended periods of admiring the furniture. Air conditioning matters when the Sicilian heat has followed you back from the sea, while the minibar gives you somewhere to keep a cold drink. You also get a TV, wardrobe, desk, private bathroom, hairdryer and either a bath or shower, with tiled or marble flooring and a private entrance in the room facilities.

For a couple, the Double or Twin Room keeps things simple, with a large king-size bed and the basic layout you need for a week by the water. Travelling with family changes the calculation: the Triple and Quadruple Rooms add sleeping space, while the Family Room for two adults and two children uses a bunk bed alongside a large bed. Daily housekeeping keeps the room from accumulating the familiar post-dive mixture of wet towels, sandy footwear and clothing that has lost all interest in folding itself. Towels and toiletries are provided, and there is a socket near the bed. WiFi is free in the public areas, which is useful for checking the next day’s plans, though it is not presented as a room-based service.

The central restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a Mediterranean style, with a view towards the Aeolian Islands. Meals are buffet-based, which suits the diver who returns hungry and would rather point at dinner than debate a menu for half an hour. There are five themed corners: Orto Ricco, Locanda 77 for traditional flavours, Fusion Lab, Cara Mamma and La Dolce Vita for desserts.

The all-inclusive formula covers the main meals and keeps drinks moving through the day. Water, white and red wine, draught beer, cola and orangeade are available with meals; coffee, draught soft drinks and granitas are available during bar opening hours. The central bar also serves aperitifs, liqueurs, cocktails and spirits. Intolerances and allergies can be flagged when booking, and children have their own meals and a child-friendly buffet.

There are three bars in all: the central bar, a panoramic terrace bar and a beach bar directly on the shore. That gives you options for the important post-dive decision between a drink with a view, a drink beside the water, and a drink that requires the least walking. A coffee house and snack bar are also on site.

The private beach is the natural place to do very little, with direct access, umbrellas, loungers and a beach bar. It is pebbly rather than sandy, so footwear that tolerates stones is a sensible bit of luggage. The resort also has an outdoor swimming pool, giving you a second place to cool off without going anywhere.

If your legs still have opinions after diving, there is a tennis court, canoeing, football, bowls, beach volleyball and organised sports tournaments. Fitness classes include power gym, soft gym and aqua gym. A wellness centre is available on site, and the resort also runs a programme of excursions to the Aeolian Islands, Cefalù, Taormina and nearby villages including Patti, Brolo and Piraino.

Evenings are not left to fend for themselves. The entertainment programme includes theatre shows, live music, TH Dance and other evening performances. Families get dedicated programmes for children and teenagers from 3 to 17, with a kids’ club, a playground, indoor and outdoor play areas, children’s meals and activities designed to give parents a little time that does not involve supervising a snack.

Check-in starts from 17:00 and check-out is by 10:00. You need photo identification and a payment card at check-in, and the property asks you to provide your expected arrival time in advance. Cash is not accepted for payments at the property. The reception is open around the clock, with luggage storage and a tour desk available.

Private parking is available on site without reservation, which is useful if you are driving around Sicily rather than arriving solely by air. An airport shuttle can be arranged on request, and transfers from airports and stations are available through the resort. Catania and Palermo are the principal airport options listed for the location, at about 112 and 118 miles respectively.

Free WiFi is available in public areas. Laundry, a boutique, a safe at reception and access for disabled guests are also available, while a doctor can be called during defined time periods. Smoking is not allowed, pets are not allowed and parties or events are not permitted. Children of any age are welcome; children aged 16 and over are charged as adults, and cots can be requested for babies aged 0 to 1.
