You get the sort of room where wet-weather grumbling, dive planning and a coffee can coexist without everyone sitting on the bed. The hotel has 26 rooms and combines a coastal setting with the useful comforts of a recently renovated property.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian, German and French. That matters when you need to explain an early breakfast request, ask about transport or sort out a treatment without resorting to enthusiastic hand signals. The atmosphere is suited to couples and to divers who want the sea nearby but also appreciate air conditioning, soundproofing and somewhere decent to recover between outings.

You can keep the evening simple: a drink at the Pool Bar, dinner on the terrace, then the balcony and the view. Or you can put the day back together in the spa, where the options include massages, a steam room, a sauna and a Jacuzzi.

You are in Castellammare del Golfo, on Sicily's north-west coast, with the hotel at Via Roma and the sea around 50 metres away. Cala Petrolo Beach is a two-minute walk from the property: golden sand, loungers and parasols, with no need to organise a small expedition for a swim. Lido Sunrise Beach is around 1 mile away on foot, while Lido Zanzibar Beach is about 1.2 miles away.

The town centre is roughly a five-minute walk away, which puts cafés, bars and restaurants within easy reach when you want to eat somewhere different. Ristorante la Madrice is around 50 feet from the hotel, Mistral about 100 feet away and Rosso Verace, an authentic pizzeria, roughly 100 feet away. Boh il Pub nelle Scale is about a two-minute walk, with Quemado Bar e Caffe around five minutes away.

This is also a useful address for land-based Sicilian days. The Segesta Archaeological Site and the Temple of Segesta are about 10 miles away by road, while Parco Suburbano San Francesco is around 7 miles away. The Castellammare del Golfo railway station is about 2 miles away on foot, so a hire car or arranged transfer will make the wider area easier to explore.

These are suites rather than places designed merely to store a suitcase. Couples wanting more room can move up to the Deluxe Suite with Spa Bath and Sea View, while the larger Executive Suite is the logical choice when four people need to live together without turning every surface into luggage storage. The Executive and Deluxe options have two bathrooms, which is not a decorative statistic when several people are trying to get ready at once. Bathrobes, slippers, towels and a hairdryer are included in the bathrooms.

Ristorante Costamante handles breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace, with the sea spread out beyond the table. The cooking is Mediterranean, built around fresh local produce and fresh fish. It is the kind of menu that makes sense in Sicily: less complicated than a dive briefing, but considerably more enjoyable when you are hungry.

Breakfast is a buffet from 7:30, with continental, Italian and gluten-free choices. Vegetarian and gluten-free dishes are also available at the restaurant. You can have breakfast in your room if the idea of making conversation before coffee is unappealing, and limited room service is available for the occasions when leaving your suite feels like unnecessary exertion.

There is one bar, the Pool Bar, serving cocktails, refreshing drinks and snacks beside the outdoor pool. It gives you a place for the first drink of the day or the one that follows dinner. The hotel operates a half-board formula, so check which meals are included when you book rather than assuming every plate and glass is covered.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place to let the day slow down, with a terrace, sun loungers, parasols and a pool bar close at hand. It is not heated, but the arrangement is uncomplicated: swim, sit down, read a few pages and decide whether moving again is really necessary. The beach is close enough to offer a second version of the same plan, this time with golden sand under your feet.

Spa Costamante covers the more deliberate recovery programme. The 150-square-metre spa offers body and facial treatments, massages, a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi, plus a relaxation area and wellness packages. Couples can book a couples massage; head, neck, back, hand and foot massages are also available. After several days of salt, sun and carrying far too much kit, the foot and back options have an obvious appeal.

If lying still is not your preferred method of rest, there is a gym and yoga classes. You can hire bicycles, join bike or walking tours, take part in a cooking class, or arrange cultural excursions around Castellammare del Golfo and the Zingaro Nature Reserve. Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat excursions are available for days spent on the surface rather than below it. Hiking and cycling add useful alternatives when you want movement without another appointment with the sea.

Falcone-Borsellino Airport is about 21 miles away, with the drive taking around 45 minutes. Trapani Airport is roughly 32 miles away. An airport shuttle is available, and the hotel also offers a shuttle service, car hire and concierge assistance. Private parking is available nearby and requires a reservation, so sort that out before arriving if you are driving.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 11:00. You need photo identification and a payment card at arrival, and the hotel asks you to share your expected arrival time. Luggage storage is available, which is handy if your flight and room timetable disagree. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested.
