Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu Honten

Traditional Japanese touches meet modern room facilities in a small, adults-only hotel in central Tokyo. The building reopened after a thorough renovation in August 2014, while the Ryumeikan name brings more than a century of hospitality behind it. This is a useful base for divers who want Tokyo outside the window rather than a resort bubble around the building.

You get a grown-up setting with air conditioning, heating, soundproof rooms and a lift. Free WiFi covers the hotel, and private check-in and check-out keep the arrival process suitably contained. There is also luggage storage, which matters when your flight and your room do not keep the same timetable.

You are in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, with Shin-Ochanomizu Underground Station about a one-minute walk away. Ogawamachi Station is roughly 300 metres from the hotel, while JR Ochanomizu Station is about 600 metres away on foot. Kanda Station is around 1 km away. In other words, you have several ways into the city before your shoes have had time to complain.

The rail connections make the main Tokyo itinerary straightforward. Akihabara and Ryogoku Kokugikan are about five minutes away by train, and the Imperial Palace is around ten minutes by train. Ochanomizu Park is about 600 metres away, with Shinobazu Pond roughly 1.5 miles from the hotel. Odaiba Beach is a city outing rather than a morning stroll, at around 4.5 miles away.

Haneda Airport is approximately 14 miles away, with a stated driving time of about 30 minutes. Narita International Airport is around 39 miles away by road. The location is firmly urban: stations, restaurants, museums, parks and historic sites are all within reach, while the nearest seaside option requires a proper trip across Tokyo.

The rooms are unusually generous by central Tokyo standards, with a separate living area containing a sofa and desk. The choice is mainly between a standard layout and a corner twin arrangement, with two single beds in both. The corner option gives you more room to spread out, while the standard room keeps things simpler for two adults who would rather spend their time in the city than negotiating furniture.

The atmosphere combines modern equipment with Japanese aesthetic touches. Air conditioning and heating cover the seasonal extremes, while soundproofing helps draw a line between your room and the city outside. That is the useful kind of comfort: less decorative fuss, more chance of sleeping properly before an early start.

A minibar, coffee machine and electric kettle let you sort out water, coffee or a quiet drink without staging an expedition. You also get a flat-screen television with satellite channels, plus a Blu-ray and DVD player. The private bathroom has a bath, complimentary toiletries and bathrobes, so you can soak rather than simply collapse. Selected rooms are offered on an eco plan without daily cleaning, which suits you if you prefer fewer interruptions during a city stay.

The hotel restaurant, 1899 Ochanomizu, serves fusion-style Japanese cuisine with selected green tea. That gives the evening a more specific direction than a generic hotel dining room: Japanese flavours, contemporary combinations and tea treated as part of the meal rather than an afterthought.

Breakfast is available to take away. For a diver with an early departure, that is the practical version of breakfast: something you can carry rather than a long argument with a buffet. Later in the day, nearby choices include Italian restaurant IWAKURA and a Chinese restaurant about 200 metres away, with further cafés and bars within roughly 500 metres.

There is a restaurant on site, but no bar is listed. You can therefore eat at the hotel, take breakfast with you, or step out into the Ochanomizu streets when you want a change of menu. The hotel does not operate on a stated half-board or all-inclusive basis.

This is a city base, not a hotel built around a programme of poolside activities. Your post-dive options are therefore refreshingly simple: take a bath, put on the robe, use the WiFi and decide whether Tokyo deserves another outing today. Some days, that is the correct itinerary.

For a quieter walk, Ochanomizu Park is about 600 metres away. The surrounding area also gives you small cultural targets rather than only major-ticket attractions: the Meiji University Museum is around 500 metres away, while the Iwasaki Yanosuke Residence Site and several historic monuments sit within roughly 400 metres. Yushima Seido is around 800 metres away, and the Origami Kaikan is about 850 metres away.

If you are travelling as a couple, the room’s sofa and separate living area give you somewhere to sit without turning the bed into a command centre. If you are travelling alone, the desk is useful for sorting plans, photos or the next train. There is no need to invent a resort routine here; Tokyo supplies the activity, and the hotel gives you a comfortable place to stop.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 22:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is by 11:00. Private check-in and check-out are available, and luggage storage helps if your travel plans leave a gap between leaving the room and leaving Tokyo.

Free private parking is available on site, with a reservation required. Cash is not accepted, so plan to pay by card. Pets are not allowed. Children over 13 can stay, but cots and extra beds are not available; the room choice therefore needs to work with the beds already provided.

The nearest JR Ochanomizu Station does not have lifts or escalators. If you have heavy luggage, the practical alternative is a taxi from Tokyo Station, around a 15-minute ride. Shin-Ochanomizu and Ogawamachi Underground Stations are close by, but station access in Tokyo is not always kind to tired legs or large cases. Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel, and non-smoking rooms are offered.
