You can spend the day in the water, then return to a balcony, air conditioning and a cold drink without turning the evening into another expedition.

The atmosphere is relaxed and practical rather than urban. Tropical forest, beach and reef surround the property, while the resort also gives you a swimming pool, a spa and enough food variety to avoid eating the same thing every night. Families can use the family rooms and children’s pool, while couples have the sea, sunset drinks and a little less timetable to worry about.

You are in Kampung Paya on Tioman Island, Malaysia, directly beside a white-sand beach. Paya Beach is around 50 metres away, so the sea is part of your immediate surroundings rather than a day trip. Genting Beach is about 1 mile away, while ABC Beach is around 5 miles from the resort.

The Paya Village jetty is only about 100 metres away, and the walk from the landing point to the resort takes roughly three minutes. That matters when you arrive with luggage, and even more when you are leaving with wet-weather concerns and ferry timings in the back of your mind. Santai Cafe is around 350 feet away, Paya Cafe Corner around 250 feet and Pantai Paya Restaurant around 50 feet.

For something beyond the beach, Rock Fall is about 350 metres away. The Tat Turtle Sanctuary is around 2 miles away, while Pusat Taman Laut is about 2.5 miles from the resort. Tioman’s monsoon season runs from mid-November to early February, when ferry services can be cancelled or altered because of poor weather.

Every room has a balcony, private bathroom with shower, air conditioning, desk, flat-screen television and an electric kettle. That gives you a sensible place to sit, cool down and empty the pockets after a day outside. A fan is also available, while the balcony and outdoor furniture provide somewhere to take the air without having to go straight back to the beach.

For two people, the Deluxe Double Room or Club Deluxe King keeps the sleeping arrangement straightforward, with a king-size bed. The twin versions suit dive partners who prefer separate beds. If you are travelling as a small group, the triple and quadruple layouts are the practical choices, with room configurations built around double, king-size and single beds rather than makeshift sleeping arrangements.

The Club Deluxe rooms offer the larger room category, while the Deluxe rooms still provide a substantial base for a couple or family. Family rooms are available, and children of any age are welcome; children aged 12 and over are treated as adults for the accommodation policy. Cots and extra beds are not available, so choose the room layout around the people actually travelling rather than hoping the furniture will perform miracles.

You have three restaurants listed with the resort, but the wider food line-up goes well beyond that. Aman Kopitiam sits by the beach and serves Malaysian dishes, snacks, fresh coconut, drinks, Ais Kacang and Cendol from 9:00am to 11:00pm. Fatty Grill Fish works as an open-air hawker stall from 5:00pm to 11:00pm, with grilled seafood and island-style barbecue.

For breakfast, 2pai Cafe opens from 6:00am to 9:30am, with an international buffet and a sea view. That early start is useful when your boat leaves before most holidaymakers have found their first coffee. Dinner returns there from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, with the sunset doing some of the decorative work.

Ocean Bliss Chinese Restaurant covers Cantonese cooking at lunch and dinner, while Italian Corner serves handmade pizzas and freshly cooked pasta from midday to 10:00pm. Oden Bar Food Truck and Big Mama Food Truck add Japanese finger food and Thai dishes until late, and Ginger Bread Café serves coffee, Taiwanese bubble tea, egg waffles and small bites until 11:30pm. The Sunset Bar brings mocktails, cocktails, light bites and live band music to the evening. Breakfast is included in the stated meal plan.

The Rock Pool is the obvious place to let the sea have a day off. It is an outdoor pool with a water slide, lounging areas and a separate children’s pool, so you can choose between a quiet spell in a sun lounger and the more energetic end of the family timetable. The direct beach access remains there when the pool starts to feel like too much chlorinated enthusiasm.

The Thai Wellness Spa offers massages, body scrubs and aromatherapy, which is the sort of menu that makes sense when your shoulders have spent the day carrying kit. You can also take a kayak, go snorkelling, join a boat excursion or try a billiards session. On land, the resort offers jungle trekking, ATV outings and visits to a turtle campsite, with batik painting and a karaoke room for a different sort of evening.

You reach Tioman Island by ferry from Mersing or Tanjong Gemok, with the crossing taking roughly one and a half to two hours. Ferries stop at Paya Village jetty, followed by a walk of about three minutes to the resort. During the monsoon season, weather can affect ferry operations, so allow some flexibility around arrival and departure rather than planning the connection like a railway timetable.

Check-in runs from 3:00pm to 8:00pm and check-out from 10:00am to 11:00am. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the property does not accept cash for payments. The resort takes part in Ghost Net Removal with Reef Check Malaysia and TMCG Tioman. The work is aimed at removing abandoned fishing nets that can damage coral reefs and marine life.
