The Station Tioman

Adults-only and deliberately rustic, this small lodge suits couples, solo travellers and remote workers who would rather hear the sea than a lift bell. The Station Tioman places you directly on the beach, with a garden behind the accommodation and a more private stretch of sand at the quiet end of Tekek Beach. You get a proper island base, not a polished tower with a palm tree in reception.

English and German are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the useful things clearly, whether that means arranging your arrival or asking where to eat. The setting is laid-back and close to nature, with beach, jungle and reef all part of the daily geography. Hammocks and outdoor seating do the rest; after that, the main decision is whether to move.

You are in Kampung Tekek on Tioman Island, Malaysia, right at the end of Tekek Beach. The property has direct access to white sand, with loungers and hammocks available for the stretch of the day when you have no intention of doing anything strenuous. The water in front is clear and warm, with a gentle tide and no rocks making the entry awkward.

Tekek village and local restaurants are within a short walk. Restoran Sarang Seafood is about 0.1 miles away, while Tioman Station is roughly 0.2 miles away and Tioman Cabana Village about 0.3 miles away. Pusat Taman Laut is around 0.6 miles away, and the Tat Turtle Sanctuary about 1.4 miles away. The island does not leave you stranded in a resort bubble; you can reach food, village life and nearby nature without turning every meal into an expedition.

ABC Beach is around 1.7 miles away by road, and Paya Beach about 2.8 miles. Monkey Bay Beach is around 4.6 miles away on foot. The nearest airport is Pulau Tioman Airport, about 1 km away, but the practical island route is by passenger ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok.

For two, the sea-view rooms with a balcony are the obvious choice if you want the island to remain part of the room rather than disappearing behind a wall. A garden-view room gives you a greener outlook, while a terrace room suits anyone who values a little outdoor space and a larger bed. If you are sharing with a small group, choose the larger balcony layout rather than trying to negotiate personal space around one king-size bed. That conversation rarely improves with age.

Air conditioning, a fan and a mosquito net cover the practical side of a tropical night. Rooms also have private bathrooms with hot-water showers, towels, toiletries and hairdryers, while a refrigerator lets you keep water cold and the kettle deals with the first cup before conversation becomes possible. A seating area and work desk are available in the accommodation categories designed for longer stays or remote work.

The rooms come with private entrances, balconies or terraces, and free Wi-Fi. The wooden huts can be a little squeaky, with earplugs provided, so light sleepers may wish to make use of them. Smoking is allowed on the balcony but not inside the rooms, and cooking in or near the accommodation is not permitted.

Breakfast is available à la carte at the adjoining Swiss Cottage. That gives you a straightforward start before heading to the beach or into the village, rather than asking the room kettle to perform the duties of a full kitchen. There is no room service, so meals happen where meals are meant to happen: outside your room.

The on-site Beach Cafe handles the useful in-between moments with ginger beer, sandwiches and croissants. It sits by the beachfront, where you can eat while watching the world go by without dressing for the occasion. Relaxed is the operative word here.

For a proper meal, Restoran Sarang Seafood is only about 0.1 miles away, with other restaurants within the village. The island is duty-free for alcohol, and some restaurants allow guests to bring their own drinks; check with the restaurant before arriving with provisions. Cash is accepted for payments at the property, so keep some Malaysian ringgit to hand rather than relying on optimistic technology.

The beach in front of the property is the main piece of kit. You can swim from the white sand, settle into a hammock, stretch out on a lounger or snorkel over the house reef directly in front of The Station. Clear, warm water and a gentle tide make this an easy option when you want a look beneath the surface without committing to a full outing.

For a little more movement, kayaks and paddleboards are available, along with fishing and boat excursions. On land, you can take a guided jungle trek, join an island-hopping trip or head towards places such as Pak Musa, Juara or Asah Waterfall. There are also routes from Tekek to Juara and Paya, plus the Dragon Horn via ferrata and climbing. Wildlife observation is part of the programme, and surfing is available during the monsoon season.

The choice works well for a couple with different energy levels: one of you can take the water seriously while the other remains horizontal. A concierge service is available to help organise the practical side of local activities, and a doctor can be requested if island life delivers one of its less charming surprises.

Tioman is reached by passenger ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, with the crossing taking around two to two and a half hours. The ferry stops at Tekek. From the ferry exit, allow roughly a ten-minute walk to the property, turning right and following the road; the beach route is shorter and more pleasant once you know the way. With luggage, the road is the sensible first approach. Under the stars, the beach wins.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 18:00, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 08:00 to 11:00. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested, while private and express check-in and check-out are available. Luggage storage is also available for the awkward gap between ferry and room.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Bring cash for your stay and extras, as payments at the property are accepted in cash. Malaysia uses Type G three-pin plugs and 230V electricity. Smoking is restricted to designated areas and balconies, pets are not allowed, and the rooms are for adults only.

A free water dispenser in the garden lets you refill bottles instead of buying another plastic one every time you return from the beach. It is a small, useful measure rather than a sermon, which is usually the more convincing approach.

Tioman is a Marine Park, and the property links its approach to ongoing marine conservation work. The house reef and surrounding waters are part of the reason to come here, so reducing single-use plastic and treating the marine environment as something other than an unlimited backdrop makes practical sense.
