Lorenzo Sub Diving Center

Lorenzo Sub Diving Center has been a cornerstone of the diving community in the Tuscan-Ligurian region since 1998. Operating from Ameglia Fiumaretta, the centre serves as a gateway to the diverse marine environments of the Golfe de La Spezia, extending from the Portovenere Marine Protected Area to the Cinque Terre National Park and towards Levanto.

The centre is ideally positioned for those looking to explore the varied topography of the area, from shallow reef flats to deep technical wrecks. Whether you are looking to train in freediving or push your limits with rebreather and trimix diving, the facility is built around a deep expertise in both recreational and technical underwater disciplines.

The team at Lorenzo Sub is defined by a high level of technical proficiency and decades of experience. They provide instruction and guidance across a wide spectrum of specialties, including adaptive diving for people with disabilities and specialized training for freedivers and spearfishermen.

With a focus on professionalism and continuous training, the instructors are well-versed in the specific requirements of the local waters. They offer tailored support for different groups, including dedicated outings for underwater photographers and organised group excursions.

The training programme is comprehensive, covering all levels of certification through SSI and IANTD. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course or introductory breath-hold training, while more advanced divers can pursue SSI Deep Diver, Wreck, or Dry Suit specialities.

For technical divers, the centre offers advanced training including Nitrox, Trimix (using ternary mixtures as bottom gas), and Rebreather SCR. They also provide instruction on the use of pure oxygen for planned decompression dives. Beyond scuba, the centre is a hub for freediving, offering Apnea courses, Pranayama breathing stages, and specialised training for spearfishing.

Excursions are carried out using gommoni, which allow for efficient transit to the various dive sites across the gulf. Most sites are reached within 15 to 30 minutes of navigation from the centre.

Technical diving is supported with Nitrox and Trimix available for use on trips. The boats facilitate a range of dive types, including night dives and technical explorations of the local wrecks and caves.

The centre operates a well-stocked shop and service department within the same building as the diving headquarters. Divers can access changing rooms, showers, and dedicated areas for equipment storage. The facility is designed for convenience, allowing you to arrive by car for easy loading and unloading of your kit, with free parking located less than 100 metres away.

Technical divers will find the necessary support for advanced profiles, including Nitrox and rebreather capabilities. The centre also provides equipment maintenance services to ensure your kit is ready for the Mediterranean conditions.

The marine life in this region is exceptionally diverse, particularly around the rocky walls and submerged pinnacles. You will encounter a wide array of gorgonians, including yellow gorgonians, white gorgonians, and paramuricee gorgonians. The seabed is often decorated with parazoanthus, spirograph, cerianthus, and various colourful encrusting sponges.

Macro life is a highlight for many divers, with numerous nudibranch species frequently spotted. The crevices and caves are home to a variety of crustaceans, including lobsters, spiny lobsters, common shrimp, and mechanical shrimp, alongside octopus and various species of moray eel.

In the open water and around the reefs, you can observe large schools of fish such as seabream, mullet, sars, and dorades. During the summer, the area becomes particularly active with transient fish, and between May and June, it is possible to encounter ocean sunfish.

Benthic life is further enriched by the presence of fanworms, squat lobsters, and various species of anemones. In the seagrass meadows and sandy patches, you may also see Pinna nobilis and various species of Mediterranean fish.

Divers should be aware that certain sites, such as Secca del Tinetto, Punta del Tino, Secca di Dante, and the southern ridge of Secca del Tinetto, can experience strong currents. These areas are best suited for experienced divers who are comfortable managing moving water.

Navigation and dive planning should account for the varied topography, which includes deep walls, caves, and submerged pinnacles. The proximity of the sites to the centre means most dives are within a 20 to 30-minute boat ride.
