Megale Hellas Diving Center

Located in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, Megale Hellas Diving Center has been a fixture of the Calabrian diving scene since 2007. The centre provides access to three distinct maritime environments: the Ionian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the unique currents and topography of the Strait of Messina.

Whether you are looking to explore Mediterranean wrecks, navigate vertical walls, or discover underwater caves, the centre's operations are designed to showcase the region's high biodiversity. Beyond the water, they also organise excursions into the Aspromonte National Park for a complete experience of the Calabrian landscape.

The centre is run by Francesco and Roberta, who bring years of experience to their professional and welcoming service. They provide instruction and guidance in both English and Italian, ensuring clear communication for international divers.

Affiliated with SSI and CMAS, the centre offers a wide range of training, from entry-level courses to professional instructor programmes. They also host specialised underwater archaeology camps and provide adaptive diving programmes for people with disabilities.

The training catalogue is extensive, covering everything from the initial Open Water Diver course through to advanced certifications. For those looking to progress, they offer Divemaster and Instructor programmes, alongside specialised training such as Nitrox and Deep Diver.

Technical and niche disciplines are also well-represented, with courses in Wreck diving, Apnea (freediving), and Underwater Archaeology. This allows divers to tailor their progression toward specific interests, whether that be technical exploration or scientific study.

The centre utilises a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) to transport divers to the local sites, providing a reliable platform for exploring the nearby reefs and walls.

A full range of rental equipment is available on-site for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes regulators, wetsuits, fins, and masks, ensuring you have everything required for your dives.

For night diving or low-light exploration, torches are available for hire. The centre is set up to support both recreational and technical training requirements.

The marine life in this region is remarkably diverse, particularly around the artificial reefs and underwater structures. You can expect to find a variety of benthic life, including octopus, stargazers, and weevers.

For those with an eye for macro life, the area is an excellent place to search for seahorses. The reef habitats also host various species of octopus, making it a rewarding location for photographers and observant divers.

Pelagic life and larger marine species are also present, adding variety to the dives along the walls and through the deeper sections of the Strait of Messina.
