Nautilus Diving Center

Nautilus Diving Center is a long-established PADI 5 Star Dive Resort situated in Palau, Sardinia. As the first centre of its kind in the area, it serves as a primary gateway to the highly protected marine parks of La Maddalena and Lavezzi, which host more than 40 distinct dive sites.

The centre is managed by Vinny and Stephanie, who bring decades of diving experience to the operation. Its central location in Palau means you are only a short walk from the port, making logistics straightforward for those arriving by car or bus from Olbia airport.

The team is led by Vinny, a captain with over 10,000 dives to his credit and a specialist in underwater photography, and Stephanie, who manages dive trips and local accommodation arrangements. They operate a professional environment where small groups are prioritised to ensure personalised attention during training or guided dives.

Communication is easy for international divers, as the team is proficient in French, English, Italian, and German. This multilingual approach helps ensure that safety briefings and technical instruction are clearly understood by all guests.

The training programme is extensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

For those looking to professionalise their skills, the centre offers Divemaster and Assistant Instructor programmes. Technical divers will find a dedicated curriculum including Tec 40, Tec 45, and Tec 50 courses, as well as Side Mount Diver and Self Reliant Diver training.

Speciality courses are also widely available, ranging from Peak Performance Buoyancy and Deep Diving to more niche skills like Dry Suit Speciality, Search and Recovery, and Underwater Digital Photography Speciality. The centre is also an expert in gas blending, offering the DSAT Gas Blender course.

The centre operates two specialised vessels to reach the various sites in the archipelago. The Selamat Jalan is an 11-metre custom-built boat powered by twin 320 hp VM engines, designed to provide a stable platform for divers.

For smaller groups or specific access needs, the Sambal is a 6.5-metre BWA semi-rigid boat equipped with a 175 hp Suzuki 4-stroke outboard. Both boats are fitted with GPS, VHF, a depth sounder, a diving platform, and a ladder to make entries and exits easier. They also carry emergency oxygen and first aid kits on board.

On shore, the centre is equipped with a high-standard air system featuring a Coltri Sub MCH 32 double compressor. They utilise a membrane Nitrox system, which allows for efficient gas blending on-site.

Full kit hire is available for those not travelling with their own equipment, including regulators, BCDs, dive computers, wetsuits, fins, and surface buoys. The centre stocks high-quality brands such as Aqualung and Cressi. Cylinders are available in 12-litre volumes, with 10-litre and 15-litre options also provided to suit different buoyancy requirements.

The marine life around Palau is diverse, with the protected status of the surrounding parks helping to maintain healthy populations. You can expect to encounter various pelagic species passing through the area, alongside larger residents such as groupers, conger eels, and moray eels.

On the reefs and rocky structures, look for great barracuda and octopus. The Mediterranean biodiversity is well-represented here, with sightings of stonefish and various species of octopus frequent enough to be a regular highlight for observant divers.

Macro enthusiasts and those interested in smaller life will find plenty to observe, including the Maja squinado and Paramuricaea clavata. The seabed and reef structures also host a variety of gorgonians like Eunicella stricta, which add significant colour to the underwater landscape.
