You come here for a resort stay with the sea close at hand, room to spread out and enough on site to avoid turning every evening into a logistical exercise. Ciclope Resort combines gardens, a pool, a wellness centre and direct access to a black-sand beach, with Catania close enough for a change of scene.

English, Italian, German and French are spoken by the hotel team. That matters when you are arranging a dive, asking about a transfer or simply trying to establish whether dinner is still possible after a long day in the water. The atmosphere suits couples wanting a sea-facing base as well as families, with a kids' club for children aged 4 to 12, a children's pool and babysitting.

The resort is in Acitrezza, on Sicily's coast, with direct access to the Ionian Sea and a black-sand beach equipped with loungers and parasols. Acitrezza Beach is also around 300 metres away on foot, roughly a three-minute walk. You can reach the shoreline without making a project of it, which is useful when the plan is swim, dry off and find food rather than go sightseeing in full expedition mode.

Several restaurants sit within around 150 metres, including Vecchia Marina, Trattoria Pizzeria la Lampara and Ristorante Toscano. Catania's centre is about 9 miles away, with Piazza Duomo, the Roman Theatre and Villa Bellini around 5 to 6 miles from the resort. Catania Fontanarossa Airport is about 9 miles by road. For a broader Sicilian outing, the resort organises excursions to Mount Etna, Taormina and Siracusa.

These are apartments and suites rather than simple crash pads: a useful distinction when you have wetsuits, clothes for dinner and the general debris produced by a week near the sea. The accommodation includes a kitchenette with a hob, refrigerator, kettle and kitchenware, plus a dining table and a sitting area with a sofa. You can make a hot drink, keep water cold and eat something quietly in the room when restaurant timing does not fit your day.

For two people, the Deluxe Apartment with its king-size bed keeps things straightforward. Couples wanting more space can look towards the King Suite, while the larger apartment and suite layouts suit families or small groups who prefer to stay together rather than divide themselves between rooms. Air conditioning is available for the Sicilian heat, and the rooms have balconies, terraces or patios depending on the accommodation. Soundproof rooms and soundproofing are useful details when sleep matters more than late-night sociability. A private bathroom, wardrobe, desk, flat-screen television and WiFi cover the practical side, while the inner-courtyard view attached to some accommodation keeps expectations sensibly grounded: not every room is a sea panorama.

Breakfast is served as a buffet from 7:30 to 10:00, and the stay can be booked on a half-board basis. That gives you a clear morning start and the option of making dinner part of the hotel routine rather than hunting for a table every night. Room service is available on request, handy when your appetite has arrived before your enthusiasm for changing clothes.

Ristorante La Grotta handles lunch and dinner with Sicilian cooking and local ingredients in an indoor setting. At the pool, the Pool Bar Restaurant serves lunch and dinner on the terrace, with international dishes and cocktails. It is the more casual choice when you would rather remain near the water and keep the evening uncomplicated.

There is one bar: the Pool Bar. It serves cocktails, beer and snacks during the day, so the first drink does not require a walk into town. The resort also has an on-site coffee house and a minimarket, while special-diet menus can be requested.

The main pool is outdoors, surrounded by loungers and umbrellas, with a bar built into the pool itself. It gives you an easy place to spend a non-diving afternoon without committing to a full excursion. The resort also offers an open-air bath and a solarium, so there are several ways to sit still while maintaining the appearance of having made a plan.

Ciclope Wellness Center provides massages, facials, a sauna and a Turkish bath. The fitness centre is there if your idea of recovery involves exercise rather than lying down, although nobody will judge the latter. The gardens, sun terrace, balconies and outdoor seating give you room to read, dry out and let the day become less salty.

When you want to leave the pool area, the resort can arrange or offer access to snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat excursions. Hiking and cultural excursions broaden the options beyond the shoreline, while live music and entertainment take place several times a week. Families have a kids' club, children's activities, a children's pool, children's meals and babysitting, giving adults a little more control over the evening timetable.

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is about 9 miles away by road, and an airport shuttle is available through the resort. Car hire can also be arranged. Parking is available at the resort, and luggage storage, concierge assistance and a tour desk help when your arrival, departure and excursion plans refuse to line up neatly.

Check-in starts at 2pm and check-out is by 11am. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, with a 24-hour front desk. You need photo identification and a payment card at check-in; cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Children of any age are welcome, cots can be requested for children up to 3 years old, and there are no extra beds.
