Hilton Muscat Al Bandar

Hilton Muscat Al Bandar is a large beachfront resort in the Barr Al Jissah complex, built for days that do not need much organising once you are back on dry land. You have a private beach area, gardens, pools, restaurants and a spa within the resort, with further leisure and dining facilities at the neighbouring DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Al Waha, within walking distance.

The scale matters. You can keep the evening simple with a drink and dinner on site, or stretch your legs around the complex before turning in. Families have connecting rooms, a kids' club and a children's pool; couples have sea views, beach cocktails and room categories with terraces. It is a resort for divers who want the hotel to carry the evening rather than send them back out looking for it.

You are in Muscat, Oman, at Barr Al Jissah on the Gulf of Oman. The resort is beachfront, with a 500-metre beach and Bandar Jissah Beach around 400 metres away. Qantab Beach is about 4.2 miles away by road, so a car is more useful than a heroic walk in the heat.

The setting puts sea and mountains ahead of city convenience. Heritage Village is around 650 metres away on foot, while Adventure Zone is about 300 metres away by road. Central Muscat is a 15-minute drive, Muscat City Centre Mall takes about 25 minutes, and the National Museum of Oman is roughly 9 miles away by road. The old forts, royal palace and Muscat Gate Museum are all in the same wider city area.

The practical choice depends less on the bed than on what you want to see when you open the curtains. King and Twin rooms keep things straightforward for couples or travelling companions, while sea-view rooms put the Gulf in the picture. If your day bag, clothes and post-dive clutter tend to spread with impressive efficiency, the one-bedroom suites give you more room to separate sitting space from sleeping space.

For families, the connecting rooms are the sensible answer: two sleeping areas, a super-king bed and two single beds, with room for up to five people. Choose the terrace version if stepping outside matters more to you than looking at the view through glass. The sea-view family rooms do the opposite job, keeping the Gulf as part of the room without asking everyone to share one sleeping area.

Air conditioning will be welcome when you return warm, salty and ready to stop moving. Each room has a balcony or patio overlooking the sea, pools or gardens, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. Tea and coffee facilities, a private bathroom, toiletries and room service cover the ordinary details; the beds have also drawn particular praise for comfort, which is exactly the sort of luxury that matters when the alarm is set for another boat morning.

You have six restaurants and bars on site, so dinner does not have to become a daily taxi exercise. Al Tanoor handles the all-day dining, with buffet breakfast, lunch and themed buffet dinners. Breakfast covers continental, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, Asian and American choices, which is useful when one diver wants something light and another is already planning lunch before the first coffee has landed.

The more specific meals come from the specialty restaurants: one works with Italian flavours and another with Southeast Asian dishes. There is also a snack bar, a coffee house, a bar and room service, giving you options when a full restaurant feels like unnecessary admin after a long day in the water.

For the evening, Sio2 Beach Lounge sits on the beach with cocktails and live music. Piano Lounge is indoors and opens every evening. Within the same complex, Bait Al Bahr offers seafood with ocean views, while Shahrazad and Sultanah at the adjacent Al Husn Hotel Muscat open for dinner. The resort gives you plenty of choice; the only difficult decision is whether you are still wearing sensible shoes.

The 500-metre beach, swimming pools and 550-metre Lazy River give you several ways to spend an afternoon without committing to a serious excursion. The river runs between the main pools of Hilton Muscat Al Bandar and DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Al Waha, so you can drift rather than march. Sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas are available when your preferred activity is remaining horizontal.

If you still have energy in the legs, the resort offers a tennis court, tennis equipment, cycling, billiards, a games room and a fitness centre. Yoga classes, fitness classes and a personal trainer are also available. On the water, you can choose from clear-bottom kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, jet packing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, canoeing, windsurfing and snorkelling.

The spa is set among gardens, with private spa suites and villas, a relaxation lounge, steam room, sauna, hot tub and foot bath. Treatments include massages, body scrubs, wraps, facial treatments and beauty services, including couples and full-body massages. For an easier evening, walking tours, live entertainment and a nightclub with DJ are also part of the resort's after-hours menu.

Muscat International Airport is about 28 miles away by road, with the journey taking around 45 minutes. A shuttle service is available and can be arranged with the hotel; car hire is also available. Free on-site parking, valet parking, a concierge, tour desk, currency exchange, luggage storage and a 24-hour front desk keep the practical side reasonably contained.

Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 12:00. You need photo identification and a payment card at check-in, and the minimum age for checking in is 18. Children of all ages are welcome; cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the room category and availability. Special diets can be requested, and breakfast can be served in your room. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort.
