SUBMANIA - Escola de Mergulho

Located in Senhora da Hora, Submania has been a fixture of the Portuguese diving community since 2003. The centre is built on over three decades of underwater experience, focusing on high-quality instruction and a rigorous approach to safety for every diver who walks through the door.

As a Platinum-level SSI affiliate and a PADI provider, the school caters to a wide spectrum of experience. Whether you are looking to take your first breath underwater or are working towards professional instructor ratings, the facility is designed to support your progression through structured, reliable training.

The instructional team is led by Technical Director Luís Mota, an SSI Platinum 1000 instructor and PADI MSDT with extensive experience in technical diving. His expertise is supported by a professional staff including PADI OWSI José A. Miranda, SSI Assistant Instructor Victor Marafona, and Divemaster João Ribeiro.

The team brings a global perspective to the local waters, having organised expeditions across the Arctic Circle, the Red Sea, the Caribbean, and the Indo-Pacific. This international background ensures that training is conducted with a professional standard that meets the needs of divers from all over the world.

Submania offers a complete range of training through both SSI and PADI agencies. Beginners can start with SSI Try Scuba or Basic Diver, progressing through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

The curriculum extends into specialised and professional disciplines, including Deep Diving, Wreck Diving, Advanced Wreck Diving, and Night & Limited Visibility. For those looking to turn diving into a career, the centre provides paths for Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and professional development through the SSI Master Diver programme.

Technical and niche skills are also covered, such as Dry Suit Diving, Search & Recovery, Marine Ecology, and Shark Ecology. The school also offers Basic Freediver training for those interested in breath-hold diving.

The centre operates its own dedicated support vessel, the IF, a 6.40-metre semi-rigid. The boat is well-equipped for local operations, featuring a digital nautical chart GPS, side-scan sonar for locating wrecks, and VHF radio for communication.

Safety is prioritised on board with an emergency oxygen kit always available. The IF is used to access various local dive sites, providing a stable platform for both recreational exploration and specialised training dives.

On-site facilities include a modern classroom for theoretical instruction and a dedicated filling station. The centre manages its own compressed air and Nitrox production, ensuring that Enriched Air Nitrox is readily available for internal operations.

For those requiring equipment, the centre provides various rental options. Divers completing their Open Water Diver course are encouraged to acquire their own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots for the best fit and comfort.

The rocky reefs of the area, including sites like Longas and Pêlo Negro, support a diverse range of marine life. You can observe various colourful fish, invertebrates, and a variety of aquatic plants typical of the North Atlantic.

Macro life enthusiasts will find interest in the smaller inhabitants of the seabed, including various crustaceans and invertebrates that inhabit the rocky crevices and reef structures.

The local diving environment includes various rocky bottom sites and wreck locations. Divers should be prepared for the Atlantic conditions, which can vary depending on the specific site and season.
