Culebra Divers

Culebra Divers has been an integral part of the local diving community since 1987. Located at 4 Calle Pedro Marquez, the centre is ideally positioned for those arriving by ferry, situated directly opposite the terminal and less than a mile from the airport.

Operating with a focus on small groups, the centre provides access to approximately 50 dive sites, all reachable within 30 minutes of the quay. This proximity allows for efficient morning and afternoon schedules, ensuring you spend more time in the water and less time in transit.

The centre is a 5-star operation, holding affiliations with PADI, SSI, SDI, and DAN. They are the only dive centre in Culebra officially approved by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) and the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC).

Safety and professionalism are central to their operations, with all captains holding USCG licences and instructors holding professional certifications from PADI, SDI, or SSI. Furthermore, the team is trained in DAN Diving First Aid (DFA), providing a high level of medical preparedness on the water.

Culebra Divers offers a comprehensive curriculum for all levels of experience. For those starting their journey, they provide the Open Water Diver and Discover Scuba Experience programmes. For those looking to progress, they teach Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Underwater Navigation Diver courses.

Professional training is also available, covering the Divemaster level. Their specialised course catalogue includes Advanced Buoyancy Diver, Boat Diver, Night/Limited Visibility Diver, and Search & Recovery. For those needing to brush up on skills, a Scuba Refresher is available, alongside essential safety training such as Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid, Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries, and Diving First Aid for Professional Divers.

The centre operates the Trojan, a 25-foot day-boat powered by a 300hp four-stroke Suzuki engine. It is configured to carry a maximum of six participants, which allows for a quiet, personalised experience during drift dives or reef explorations.

On board, you will find facilities designed for post-dive comfort, including a freshwater shower and a rinsing basin. The boat is equipped to handle morning and afternoon sessions, including night dives.

The centre provides full equipment hire as part of their diving packages, including masks, snorkels, and fins. For those requiring more specific kit, they maintain a well-stocked shop for purchase and rental.

Shore-based facilities include secure storage for your personal belongings, a rinsing area, and a heated freshwater shower equipped with reef-safe shampoo and conditioner. They also provide reef-safe anti-fog for your mask to ensure clear vision throughout your dives.

The local reefs are a vibrant ecosystem of hard and soft corals, providing a complex habitat for a wide array of marine life. You can expect to encounter various fish species, including eels and octopus navigating the reef structure.

Large pelagics and charismatic species are a highlight of the area. Divers frequently see stingrays, spotted eagle rays, and several species of turtles, including green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles. Sharks are also present, including nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, and hammerhead sharks.

In the macro and smaller species category, keep an eye out for seahorses and squid. During the months of January to March, you may also have the opportunity to hear the calls of migrating whales.

The dive sites around Culebra are generally characterised by gentle currents, making them suitable for a wide range of experience levels. Visibility is typically good, with recorded minimums of 18 metres.
