Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, is built for a stay where the sea, the room and the evening meal all matter. You are between the Sea of Oman and the Al Hajar Mountains, with a direct beachfront setting and enough space to make the place feel like a proper resort rather than simply a bed for the night.

The 38-metre-high domed lobby sets the tone: grand, cool and slightly theatrical, with a crystal chandelier and fountain at its centre. That is useful on arrival, but the practical appeal comes later, when you return warm and salt-covered to air conditioning, a choice of restaurants and somewhere to sit without having to leave the grounds.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Arabic, German, Spanish and French. You can therefore deal with the useful things in English from the start, whether that means arranging your arrival, asking about dinner or sorting out the details of the next day.

You are in Muscat, Oman, directly on the coast and between the sea and the Al Hajar Mountains. Al Bustan Beach is only a few steps away, while Qantab Beach is around 6 miles away by car. The setting gives you beach access without putting you in an isolated corner of the country.

Old Muscat and its museums, forts and historic sites are within driving distance. The National Museum of Oman is around 3 miles away, while Al Jalali Fort, Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace and Fort Al-Mirani are roughly 4 miles away. Bandar Al Rowdha Park is about 1 mile from the hotel, and the Bandar Al Rowdha marina area is a few minutes away.

For a meal away from the resort, Blu is around 1 mile away on foot, with other restaurants and cafés further out. Muscat International Airport is about 25 miles away by road. In other words, you have the coast immediately outside and Muscat's history within reach, but a car or arranged transport remains useful for exploring.

The room option covered here is a Deluxe Triple Room with Sea View, suited to three guests travelling together rather than a couple looking for a simple double. It combines a king-size bed with a sofa bed, so you have a separate sleeping arrangement rather than asking one diver to draw the short straw on the floor.

The useful detail is what happens around the beds. You have air conditioning, a fan, soundproofing, a refrigerator, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a private bathroom with a shower or bath, towels and a hairdryer. The fridge earns its keep when you come back thirsty, while the kitchen, oven, kitchenware, dining table and washing machine give the room more independence than a standard hotel room.

Sea, mountain and city views are part of the accommodation mix, and the triple sea-view option makes the most sense if the outlook matters to you. Free Wi-Fi covers the hotel, and the terrace and outdoor dining area add somewhere to sit outside. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so that detail is worth considering before you book if stairs are a nuisance after a long day.

You have five restaurants to choose from, which is handy when the appetite arrives before the motivation to get back in a car. Al Khiran Kitchen works as the broadest option, with a buffet built around Omani and international food and seating indoors or on the terrace overlooking the infinity pool and ocean.

China Mood focuses on Asian cooking, while Il Palazzo takes the Italian route with handmade pasta and premium ingredients. At The Pavilion, the setting is the beach and the menu brings together seafood, prime meat cuts and local produce. La Sirena Beach Restaurant is part of the ladies-only beach lounge and serves food and drinks in that beachfront setting.

Drinks and slower evenings are covered by four bars and lounges. BLU Pool & Garden Bar stays close to the pools and garden, The Atrium Lobby Lounge serves afternoon tea beneath the enormous dome, and Al Maha Bar & Lounge shifts into darker wood, lounge music and a more formal atmosphere after dark. Al Maha Jazz Lounge offers nightly jazz, soul and blues. Room service runs around the clock, so you can eat in without trying to look presentable after diving.

The direct beach access is the obvious starting point when you want water without a timetable. Snorkelling is available, and watercraft rental gives you another way to get out on the sea. The beach facilities occupy three levels, with a private ladies-only beach forming part of the beachfront complex.

There are three pools: an infinity pool, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. Add the Al Bustan Palace Spa by the Ritz-Carlton, a 3,065-square-metre beachfront spa with treatments, and you have a straightforward recovery plan for legs that have spent too much time kicking. A fitness centre is available too, although nobody will object if your idea of exercise is walking to the shade.

Evenings need not revolve around a television. The Al Maha Jazz Lounge has a nightly programme of jazz, soul and blues, while the garden, beach and lounges give you quieter places to sit. Families also have access to a kids' club, children's activities, a children's pool, a splash park and a zipline, with Ritz Kids activities centred on art, cooking and sustainability.

Check-in runs from 3 pm and check-out is by noon. The minimum check-in age is 18, and pets are not allowed. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, while concierge assistance, laundry, dry cleaning, a gift shop and a business centre cover the less glamorous but occasionally necessary parts of travelling.

Complimentary on-site parking and valet parking are available, with electric-car charging stations. An airport transfer can be arranged through the hotel's concierge, either as a private limousine service or in another form offered by the hotel; reserve it with the hotel before arrival. Muscat International Airport is about 25 miles away by road, with the journey taking around half an hour in normal conditions.

The property is scheduled for extensive renovation from 1 July 2026, covering guest rooms, dining venues and public spaces, and is due to reopen after the work with updated facilities. If your trip falls around that period, check the operating dates and the areas available before committing. The hotel accepts children of any age, but cots and extra beds are not available.

The hotel is certified Green Key. Its stated measures include recycling in guest rooms and electric-car charging stations.

The practical side is easy to understand: you can sort your room waste and charge an electric vehicle on site. That is a modest, concrete approach rather than a lecture, which suits a hotel where the sea and mountains are already doing most of the talking.
