Incheon International Airport ICN

At Incheon, you can shower, sleep and even take a Seoul tour without paying for the basics. The catch is simple: your flights may use different terminals, and the shuttle runs landside.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

The same terminal is comfortable. Different terminals, and the clock has already won.

  • For an international-to-international connection in the same terminal, follow the “Transfer” signs, remain in the international zone and use the dedicated security check no immigration. Sixty minutes is enough on a single ticket.
  • ⚠️ There is NO walking route between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The shuttle is free and frequent, but runs landside: fifteen to twenty minutes travelling time, twenty-five to thirty-five minutes gate to gate, plus formalities. Allow ninety minutes as an absolute minimum, two hours if you are on separate tickets.
  • Check your terminal the day before. It is the one detail here that genuinely changes the plan.

2–5 hrs

⭐ The shower and nap are free provided you know which floor to use.

  • Showers are on the 4th floor in the duty-free area: Terminal 1 near gates 25 and 29, Terminal 2 near gates 231 and 268. They are FREE for connecting passengers on presentation of a boarding pass.
  • ⚠️ Towels are not provided. Bring your own, or buy a kit there.
  • Nap zones are on the same floors by the same gates: reclining chairs, sometimes proper daybeds, power sockets and subdued lighting. They are free and open continuously, with occasional closures for cleaning.
  • Wi-Fi is free throughout the airport, with no paid registration.

5–10 hrs

The airport will take you to see Seoul, transport and guide included.

  • VISA REQUIRED the airport runs guided tours to Seoul and the surrounding area, lasting from one to five hours depending on the route. Transport and the guide are free. ⚠️ Paid admission to visited sites remains your responsibility: it is a free tour, not a free day out.
  • You must be allowed to enter Korea and have an onward flight within 72 hours. Register online or at the “Transit Tour” desk on the 1st floor, AFTER immigration desks 19 and 20 in Terminal 1, and near Tourist Information in Terminal 2. Take your passport and BOTH boarding passes, arrival and departure.
  • ⚠️ Most European passport holders can enter Korea without a visa for a short stay, but prior electronic authorisation may be required depending on the period and nationality. Check yours before planning to leave the airport: you apply online, not at the desk.
  • NO VISA if going out is not for you, the showers, nap zones and lounge will comfortably fill half a day.

10 hrs +

Sleep properly. There is a proper airside hotel in each terminal.

  • NO VISA each terminal has a transit hotel within the secure area: on the 4th floor near gate 11 in Terminal 1, opposite gate 251 in Terminal 2. It is for international connecting passengers and can be booked in blocks of a few hours or overnight, without passing immigration.
  • VISA REQUIRED hotels around the airport are reached by shuttle, and Seoul is a long way off: do not plan to sleep there on a short layover.
  • ⚠️ Landside cabins and capsules, often mentioned, require immigration both ways for a space in which you can endure rather than properly sleep. Against the transit hotel in your own terminal, it is not much of a contest.
  • Do not expect an airline-funded night: the stay options offered here are paid products, not airline care.
  • ⚠️ The shuttle between terminals runs LANDSIDE and does not operate at night: approximately 4 hours 30 to 23 hours 50. After midnight, changing terminals is no longer a free option another reason to use the hotel in your own departure terminal.

What catches travellers out

The city tour is free; admission is not

The airport covers transport and the guide, which is already useful. Admission tickets for the sites you visit remain your responsibility. Carry some local currency: it is the sort of small detail that spoils a visit when you arrive empty-handed.

The inter-terminal shuttle does not run airside

It is free and frequent, which sounds reassuring. It nevertheless runs through the public area: changing terminals means going out, and often passing immigration. This is not an internal shuttle like Dubai or Singapore.

Electronic authorisation may be required without a visa

Most European passport holders can enter Korea visa-free for a short stay, but an online electronic authorisation may also be required depending on the period and nationality. Arrange it before departure. Without it, the city outing is off and so is the city tour.

Why not wait it out in peace?

A lounge does not sell you a shower or a reclining seat here both are free two floors up. What it sells is a hot meal and quiet.

First, the unusually honest bit: airside, Incheon provides nap zones with reclining chairs and sockets, plus showers for connecting passengers, without asking for anything. For many layovers, that is enough.

A lounge starts to earn its keep when the wait drags on and you want a hot meal at a table, without queuing or sharing the room with half the terminal.

You can buy access as a single visit, with no membership or status, whatever airline and cabin class are on your ticket.

⚠️ Check your terminal. Incheon has two, they are not connected airside, and a lounge bought in the wrong one is a lounge lost.

Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three to five hours of peace.

Where to sleep during the layover?

NO VISAIncheon Airport Transit Hotel

A proper bed in the secure area, in your terminal, without immigration.

  • There is one in each terminal on the 4th floor near gate 11 in Terminal 1, opposite gate 251 in Terminal 2. Use the one in your departure terminal: the shuttle between them goes through the city side.
  • You can book it in blocks of a few hours or overnight, and it is for international connecting passengers.

The diver’s reflex

⭐ The rule you now meet everywhere began here, after a fire

On 28 January 2025, a power bank in an overhead locker caught fire aboard a Korean aircraft: twenty-seven people were injured and the aircraft was badly damaged. Since then, every departure from Korea follows the strictest rule in the world, regardless of airline. Keep power banks ON YOU in the seat pocket or under the seat, never in the overhead locker with terminals taped over or stored in a closed pouch. You cannot charge devices in flight, and since January 2026 Korean airlines have banned their use on board altogether. At check-in, staff validate them with a sticker. If you planned to recharge the camera housing on the flight to the island, make another arrangement. If this rule feels familiar, that is because Korea took it to international civil aviation, which made it the global standard in spring 2026.

Keep a towel and a change of clothes IN THE CABIN

Incheon is one of the rare airports where you can shower and sleep free between two long flights. But towels are not provided, and your checked bag goes through to your final destination: it will not join you on the 4th floor. A microfibre towel and a clean T-shirt in your hand luggage transform an eight-hour layover here and weigh nothing beside the regulator already in it.

Changing terminals means going back through the city side

The shuttle between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 runs through the public area. You therefore leave the secure zone, spend twenty-five to thirty-five minutes gate to gate, then go through security again and immigration too, depending on your ticket. With dive kit to collect and recheck, this is the step that eats the whole margin. Check the terminal number for your second flight before booking, not after landing.

The free shower is for connecting passengers only

This is the condition not printed in large type: the four shower areas on the 4th floor are free to anyone showing a boarding pass for an onward flight. If Seoul is your final destination, or you have gone out and returned, you will be asked to pay. Shower before going into the city, not after.
