At Taoyuan, you get free showers around the clock and a guided half-day tour if your connection allows. It is also the only Asian hub on this list where both terminals connect airside.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
The two terminals connect airside unusual enough to be worth saying.
- If you are connecting with your bags checked through to your final destination, a transit-only Skytrain links Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 WITHOUT passing immigration. The ride takes a few minutes, followed by a walk to security.
- Allow 90 minutes for international-to-international, which is the usual arrangement. Some airlines file tighter minimums for their own flights; those apply to them, not to you when you change airline.
- Every connecting passenger goes through security again before returning to the departure area, even when staying in the same terminal.
- ⚠️ With separate tickets and bags not transferred, you must enter Taiwan, collect your bag, check in again and start the whole process over. Two hours is no longer enough.
2–5 hrs
⭐ Showers are free, open 24 hours a day, with no conditions attached.
- This is the airport's strong suit, and remarkably few people know it. Showers are spread across both terminals: Terminal 1 has them on Arrivals levels 1 and 2, and Departures level 4; Terminal 2 has them on Arrivals level 1, Departures levels 3 and 4, and level 5. They are free and open 24 hours a day.
- There is no cabin, status or connecting-flight requirement: first come, first served.
- The themed waiting rooms are free too, with proper seating: near gates A7 and B6 in Terminal 1, and near gates C2, C3, C7, D1, D2, D4 and D8 in Terminal 2.
- Wi-Fi is free throughout the airport. Left-luggage facilities and automatic lockers operate continuously in both terminals, and they are paid.
5–10 hrs
After 7 hours, the tourist office will take you sightseeing free of charge.
- VISA REQUIRED a guided tour of around 4 hours is available to connecting passengers, including bus and guide, at no charge. Your layover must be between 7 and 24 hours, and you must be able to enter Taiwan.
- ⚠️ Register ONLINE between 5 and 90 days before arrival. Departures are limited to 18 places, so this is not a service to turn up for at the last minute, even if places sometimes remain on the day.
- There are 2 daily departures: one in the morning at around 8:30 and another in the afternoon at around 14:00, leaving from the tourist information centres in the Arrivals halls. A third evening departure is mainly for groups.
- Most European passport holders can enter Taiwan without a visa for up to 90 days, provided they hold a passport valid for 6 months and an onward ticket.
- NO VISA if going out is not for you, the showers, waiting rooms and lounge will see you through half a day without crossing immigration.
10 hrs +
Sleep is the sensible answer. There is an airside hotel in Terminal 2, though it will not find you by itself.
- NO VISA a transit hotel occupies level 4 of Terminal 2, inside the departures transit area. Private rooms and showers are available by the hour or overnight, without passing immigration. It is the practical answer when your passport makes leaving awkward.
- VISA REQUIRED the airport hotel is served by metro and shuttle, 5–10 minutes from the terminals. You must pass immigration both ways.
- ⚠️ The Terminal 2 capsules often mentioned are landside, so you must enter Taiwan to reach them, and they are now booked overnight rather than by day. Against an airside transit hotel, the decision is not terribly taxing.

What catches travellers out
The free half-day tour needs booking weeks ahead
The tour is free, but it is not spontaneous: register online 5–90 days before arrival, with 18 places per departure. Many discover it after landing and leave empty-handed. If your Taipei layover exceeds 7 hours, register when you book the flight.
Short published minimums belong to one airline
A 1-hour connection advertised at Taoyuan applies to flights operated by the same airline that filed it. Once your flights belong to different airlines, the reference figure is 90 minutes, and longer again with separate tickets.
Separate tickets: the transit Skytrain is no longer yours
The airside link between the terminals is reserved for passengers whose baggage is checked through to the end. If that is not you, enter Taiwan, collect your bag and repeat the entire process losing, in one stroke, this airport's main structural advantage.

You do not buy a lounge here for the shower: showers are free and widely available. You buy a hot meal, quiet, and in parts of Terminal 2, a proper nap room.
First, the honest bit: both terminals provide free showers airside, open 24 hours a day, regardless of your cabin class or status, along with themed waiting rooms where you can sit properly. For a 3–4-hour layover, that is generally enough.
A lounge starts to earn its keep beyond that: a hot meal at a table, some quiet, and near certain Terminal 2 gates, a nap area the terminal does not provide.
You can buy access individually, with no membership or status requirement, whatever airline or cabin class is on your ticket.
⚠️ A lounge shower is not always included with entry; it depends on the package. As the terminal showers are free, that is not the reason to come here.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for 3–5 hours of peace.

- It is on level 4 of Terminal 2 in the departures transit area: enter with your boarding pass and no formalities.
- You can book it by the hour or overnight a 7-hour layover does not require a whole night.
The airport hotel, served by metro and shuttle, for a proper night's sleep.
- It is on the airport site, with its own metro station: 5–10 minutes from the terminals, without relying on road traffic.
- Consider it only if your layover can absorb passing immigration twice while carrying your kit.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ Your scooter battery will not go on the aircraft
Above 160 Wh, a battery is forbidden in passenger baggage, both cabin and hold, and must travel through specialist freight. That covers underwater scooter packs and some technical lighting. Between 100 and 160 Wh, you may carry a maximum of 2, with airline approval. Below 100 Wh, they are allowed in the cabin with terminals protected. Read the marking at home: at the desk, there is no useful solution left.
Two power banks when departing Taiwan, and no more
Since 2026, Taiwanese airports limit each passenger to 2 power banks, in the cabin only, with no use or charging in flight. They are now treated as spare batteries and are therefore forbidden in the hold. ⚠️ Older lead-acid battery lamps are also poorly received at security. If your torch is 10 years old, check its battery technology before you leave.
Use the shower BEFORE going into the city
Taoyuan's showers are airside. If you leave for the half-day tour, you pass immigration and leave them behind; you will not see them again until after security, tired and short of time. The order that works is simple: shower on arrival, then go out. Slightly obvious, but it is the difference between a layover managed and a layover endured.
