Villa Santorini

Villa Santorini is a small villa resort on the coast of Vilanculos, shaped by Greek-inspired architecture and Mozambican hospitality. You stay above Kingfisher Bay, with the archipelago laid out beyond the red cliffs and the sea close enough to set the rhythm of the day. This is a place for couples, families and divers who want their accommodation to do more than provide a bed between excursions.

The mood is intimate rather than busy. You can settle into a sea-view villa, take the path down to the beach, or use the main villa as the social heart of the property, with its living areas, rooftop sala and pool courtyard. English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Portuguese, so you can deal with the practicalities of your stay without relying on dive-sign language at reception.

The set-up suits a proper holiday as much as a diving week: full-board dining, a beach directly in front of the villas, spa treatments, pools and a useful range of water and land activities. Families are welcome at any age, with the larger family villas recommended when younger children are travelling.

You are in Vilanculos, Mozambique, on the south-eastern coast of Africa. Villa Santorini sits on the red cliffs of Kingfisher Bay, overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago, with direct access to a white-sand beach. The beach is arranged daily with loungers, umbrellas, towels and bean bags, so the sea is not merely something to admire from a balcony.

The property lies about 6 miles north of Vilanculos village. That gives you a coastal setting away from the village itself, while keeping local life within reach when you want to go into town. Vilankulos Beach is about 3 miles away, and the nearby restaurant options include Vilanculos Beach Lodge, Big Blue and Shelsio Complexo, all roughly 3 to 4 miles from the property by road.

Vilanculos Airport is about 7 miles away by road, with the transfer taking around 25 to 30 minutes. On arrival, a Santorini representative meets you at the airport and takes you through the local village to the resort. The archipelago islands are reached by boat, which makes the location particularly useful for days built around the water rather than the road.

The accommodation is arranged as suites and private villas, with sea views and private patios forming the common thread. For a couple, the Main Villa suites keep the scale manageable while giving you a proper place to sit, a balcony and the view that brought you here in the first place. The Bazaruto Suite is the practical choice if having a private bathroom matters; the smaller Main Villa rooms are aimed at two guests and have king-size beds in several categories.

If you want more room to spread out, the larger villas change the nature of the stay. The Chapel is a two-bedroom villa for up to four guests, while Villa Da Praia is the family option for up to eight, with four bathrooms and sea views from its elevated position. Villa Na Colina is a stand-alone suite for two, with its own heated pool. In other words, you can choose between being close to the shared life of the Main Villa and having a private base where the rest of the world can make its own arrangements.

Air conditioning and a fan help take the edge off a warm coastal night, while mosquito nets are fitted over the beds. Rooms have private bathrooms, wardrobes, seating areas and desks, with balconies or terraces attached to the accommodation. Daily housekeeping, laundry and room service around the clock are useful details when wet kit, salty skin and sandy clothes have all had their say. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

Full board is the basis here, with breakfast, lunch and dinner covered in the daily arrangement. Breakfast can be ordered à la carte and includes continental, buffet, full English or Irish and vegetarian choices. There is also room service around the clock, packed lunches and snacks throughout the day, which is exactly the sort of arrangement that prevents a hungry diver from eyeing the decorative fruit bowl as a main course.

Main Villa Dining covers Mediterranean, seafood, local Mozambican and fusion cooking, indoors or outside on the terrace. Fresh seafood, meat skewers, salads and vegetables from the on-site garden do the heavy lifting, with homemade granola, ice creams and chocolate fondant appearing among the more memorable details. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and children’s diets are catered for.

Lunch can move to the courtyard for pizza from the wood-fired oven, to the vegetable garden for a lighter Mediterranean meal, or to Kingfisher Bay for a beach picnic of wraps, salads, fruit and skewers. Dinner has more theatrical options, including private outdoor dining at Paraiso Escondido and a four-course Celebration of Mozambique menu. There are three bars: the rooftop Sala Bar for cocktails and canapés, the Hole in the Wall Cellar for wine, champagne, spirits and malts, and the Adega Bar Kitchen for coffee, ice cream, refreshments and cocktails. Homemade ice cream is available all day, which may be the most dangerous sentence in the whole description.

Five outdoor pools give you several ways to cool down without making the beach carry the entire afternoon. The Main Villa has the shared pool courtyard, while Villa Na Colina and Paraiso Escondido have heated private pools. The Chapel and Villa Da Praia each have a private rim-flow pool with sea views. Sun loungers, umbrellas and beach towels are available for the simpler plan: find a comfortable position and stay there until someone mentions food.

Spa Na Colina provides massages, facials and beauty treatments, using Cspa African-inspired essential oils and Thalgo marine skincare. Couples’ massages, foot and hand treatments, body treatments and a relaxation area are all part of the menu. Yoga is available as private Hatha or Vinyasa sessions, giving you a gentler way to persuade stiff shoulders and hips back into working order.

Away from the pools and spa, the property can arrange kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, kitesurfing, fishing, dhow cruises, boat charters and island excursions. On land, there are beach walks, horse safaris, cultural town tours, badminton, cricket, beach volleyball, kite flying and movie nights. A sunset dhow cruise or a local musicians’ evening at Paraiso Escondido gives couples something to do when the sun has gone down but bedtime still feels premature.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 11:00. Airport transfers are available from Vilanculos Airport and can be arranged with the management team. The service may be shared with other guests. Children of all ages are welcome. Villa Da Praia and The Chapel are the family choices for children under 12, while Main Villa suites are recommended for families with older children. Cots and children’s teepee tents can be arranged, babysitting is available, and chefs prepare children’s menus and snacks. There are no extra beds, and children need adult supervision around the pools. A safe is available at reception, while laundry, daily housekeeping and free Wi-Fi keep the practical side of a longer stay under control.

The Santorini Footprints initiative links the resort to community and environmental work in the Vilanculos area. Its projects include the Vilanculos Beach Clean-Up Project, which removes around 600 kg of waste each quarter, and support for Chigamane Primary School, including daily meals for 500 children, infrastructure, school access kits, teacher housing and a vegetable garden.

The resort also works with ParCo on early childhood development, marine biodiversity, plastic pollution, health and education. Pack for a Purpose and the Luz Project are part of the wider programme, with the latter supporting sunscreen and protection for children with albinism.
