Diving Tofo: open-water diving with pelagic encounters

Tofo is a shore-based diving destination built around daily boat trips from a small beach village on the Inhambane coast. The underwater appeal lies less in postcard coral gardens than in open-water encounters, sandy-bottom reefs and cleaning stations used by manta rays. There is a useful spread of profiles, from the five- to ten-metre Clown Fish Reef to advanced sites reaching 30 metres. It suits divers who are prepared to repeat outings for changing conditions and wildlife.

Tofo’s sites are mostly offshore reefs rising from sand, with walls, arches, bommies, caves and canyon-like passages rather than one continuous sheltered reef. At Praia da Rocha, natural channels run between coral outcrops at 10 to 14 metres; Marble Arch forms a shallow, donut-shaped reef with three linked arches. Deeper water brings the more demanding profiles: Manta Reef’s plateau sits between 19 and 26 metres, while Reggies, Kingfisher and Sherwood Forest reach 30 metres. Current is variable across the area, from light to moderate flow at Galleria to potentially strong or shifting water at sites such as Oasis, Robs Bottom and Amazon. Visibility can range from 5 to 40 metres, with plankton affecting both water clarity and animal activity. These are boat dives with blue-water entries and mid-water ascents, so good buoyancy matters more than simply holding the required certification.

Manta rays are the recurring thread through Tofo’s diving, with Galleria, Oasis and Sherwood Forest offering reef structures and cleaning-station encounters. Kingfisher is associated with feeding whale sharks and giant manta rays, while Reggies may produce a leopard shark alongside grey reef and whitetip reef sharks. Turtles, potato groupers, snapper, bigeyes, moray eels, octopus, shrimp and nudibranchs keep the closer inspection worthwhile on less dramatic dives. Humpback whales are more likely from June to October. The measured window from December to May favours broader pelagic activity, but sightings remain wildlife encounters rather than scheduled performances. At Robs Bottom, a giant grouper and giant guitarfish add a more unusual possibility; Amazon can bring white-tip reef sharks, leopard sharks and, seasonally, hammerheads.

December to May is the measured period to favour, when the sea is generally calmer and warm-season conditions make boat operations more comfortable. April to November brings the lowest rainfall overall, but that does not automatically make every diving day easier: August and September can be windy, with a more agitated surface affecting entries and exits. The humpback season runs from June to October, so divers weighing whale encounters against calmer summer seas must choose their priority. February, March, April, October and November are noted for particularly good visibility at Galleria, although Tofo’s water clarity remains ocean-dependent and can change with plankton.

Open Water divers can use the shallower sites, including Clown Fish Reef, Praia da Rocha and Salon. Advanced Open Water, or equivalent experience, becomes useful for Manta Reef, Oasis, Kingfisher, Reggies, Sherwood Forest and Amazon, where depths reach 24 to 30 metres and currents may change. BSAC, PADI and SSI qualifications are relevant through their equivalent recreational levels. The important practical measure is comfort in open water: controlled descents, stable buoyancy around cleaning stations and calm management of a blue-water safety stop.

From London or Manchester, reaching Tofo involves an international flight towards southern Mozambique followed by a road transfer to the Inhambane coast and on to Tofo. There is no ferry that must be taken to reach the diving base, and the destination is not served by a dedicated domestic flight in the travel pattern described here. The road leg is therefore the part to build into the itinerary rather than treating Tofo as an airport-side stop. Once in the village, diving is organised from the coast, with boats making day trips to offshore sites. A compact base helps keep the daily routine straightforward, but the onward transfer still needs to be allowed for when arranging flight connections and the return journey.

Tofo rewards a run of diving days rather than a single booked outing. Sea conditions can cancel or reshape a boat trip, so keeping a spare day in the schedule is more useful than packing every day with commitments. Bring the personal equipment that matters most, particularly if relying on a small coastal base where the rental selection may be limited. Ask before boarding whether the planned outing is centred on pelagic observation or reef exploration: the difference affects depth, current and the sort of dive being prepared for. Do not arrive expecting a sheltered lagoon. Surface comfort and visibility can be less predictable than the village setting suggests, while sites such as Robs Bottom and Amazon demand a realistic view of current and depth. At manta cleaning stations and on sandy bottoms, precise buoyancy prevents accidental contact and keeps the encounter quiet. A Nitrox qualification is useful, but it does not replace the experience needed for deeper, variable-current dives.

A Tofo stay works best as a land-based diving holiday, with boat departures arranged from the village and several days devoted to the same coastal area. Non-divers have the beach, coastal views and non-diving boat outings, although the destination remains more dive-led than a broad resort. A quieter day can be kept at either end of the diving block, especially before the return flight, so sea-related changes do not squeeze the travel connections.
