Maputo Dive Center

Maputo Dive Center operates at the heart of Mozambique's most celebrated diving regions, providing access to the renowned reefs of Tofo and Ponta do Ouro. As a locally owned and managed PADI 5-Star centre, they offer an authentic connection to the coastline and its marine ecosystems.

Beyond standard dive excursions, the centre organises integrated dive and safari trips. These expeditions can take you from the coastal reefs to the interior of the Kruger National Park, offering a unique way to experience the diverse landscapes of Southern Africa.

The centre is defined by its local roots, being entirely owned and managed by the Mozambican community. This local expertise is reflected in their instruction, with experienced local instructors guiding you through the waters of the Mozambique Channel.

Their commitment to the region goes beyond tourism through the 'Zero to Hero' programme. This initiative focuses on marine conservation and community empowerment by training local residents to become divers and marine biologists.

The centre provides a full spectrum of PADI training for all experience levels. Beginners can start with the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) programme or work towards their PADI Open Water Diver certification.

For those looking to progress, they offer the PADI Advanced Open Water course and the Enriched Air Nitrox course. These certifications are essential for making the most of the deeper sites and the varied marine life the region has to offer.

Dives are conducted from semi-rigid inflatable boats, which are well-suited for the local conditions. These vessels provide reliable transport to the various reef systems located around Tofo and Ponta do Ouro.

Onboard, you will find snacks provided to keep you fuelled between dives. The centre also facilitates night dives, with the boats prepared for evening departures to explore the reefs under cover of darkness.

For those travelling with minimal kit, the centre offers wetsuit hire to ensure you are comfortable during your sessions.

Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom time or manage nitrogen loading on multi-dive days. This is particularly useful for the deeper excursions or the double-tank dives often undertaken at the northern reef sites.

The region is a magnet for large pelagics. Between June and September, humpback whales use these waters as a migratory highway. You will also find frequent sightings of manta rays and various reef sharks, including whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, and leopard sharks, particularly from November to March. During the warmer months from October to March, the deeper Pinnacles site offers the chance to see bull sharks, tiger sharks, and hammerhead sharks.

In the shallower reef sections, you will encounter large schools of predatory fish such as jacks and great barracuda, alongside potato groupers. Sea turtles and dolphins are also common visitors to the local reefs.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a diverse array of invertebrates. Look for octopus, moray eels, and various species of nudibranchs, as well as lobster and shrimp hiding among the coral.

The seabed and reef structures are rich with life, featuring hard corals, soft corals, sponges, sea anemones, and giant clams. You may also spot honeycomb stingrays resting on the sandy patches or guitarfish patrolling the reef flat.

The Mozambique Current ensures that the waters remain warm throughout the year. However, divers should be prepared for strong currents on certain sites, which may require negative entries.

Depending on your destination, surf launches may be required to access the dive sites, particularly in areas like Tofo and Ponta do Ouro. The swell can vary, so it is important to check the local conditions before heading out.
