Hotel Punta Negra

Hotel Punta Negra is a seafront base in Alghero for divers who like their day to end with a swim, a proper meal and somewhere comfortable to sit rather than another timetable. Set on a cliff beside the Mediterranean, it combines direct beach access with two outdoor pools and views towards the sea, Alghero or the pinewood.

The atmosphere is relaxed and practical. You can move from the water to a sun lounger, from there to the terrace, and eventually to the restaurant without turning the evening into an expedition. The hotel team speaks English, Italian, German and French, so you can discuss the useful things easily: breakfast, a car, a boat trip or the best way into Alghero.

Couples should particularly like the setting, with sea-view rooms, terraces and a lobby bar for a drink before dinner. Families are welcome too, with family rooms, babysitting and children’s meals available.

You are in Fertilia, within Alghero in Italy, directly beside the sea and close to Punta Negra Beach. The hotel has direct access to a 200-metre golden-sand beach, with loungers and parasols, reached by a flight of 16 steps. The sea is about 50 metres away, so the shoreline is not a distant promise on a map; it is part of the daily layout.

Alghero city centre is about 1.9 miles away. A bus stop is a five-minute walk from the hotel, with services reaching Alghero in around ten minutes. That gives you a straightforward option for an evening in town without automatically committing to a hire car.

The nearby area keeps a few useful alternatives within reach. Il Paguro is roughly 0.35 mile away, while Ballarini Bar Focacceria Griglieria is about 0.4 mile away. For a change from the beach, the Nuraghe di Palmavera is around 1.7 miles away, and Fertilia Beach is about 0.7 mile from the hotel.

The room choice is mainly about how much of the Mediterranean you want to bring into the evening. Sea-view rooms and the rooms with balconies or terraces make sense if you expect to spend time outside with a drink, while pinewood-view rooms trade the open horizon for a greener outlook. The suite with terrace and sea view gives a couple more room to spread out, and the connected double rooms provide a workable arrangement for a group of four.

For a solo diver, the single rooms keep things simple. Couples can choose between a standard double or twin arrangement and a sea-view option with a balcony, depending on whether the view or sleeping layout matters more. Families have triple rooms, including a sea-view version with a balcony, as well as connected rooms that give adults and children separate sleeping spaces without being placed in entirely separate parts of the hotel.

Rooms are air-conditioned and decorated in light colours with characteristic artwork. You get a television with satellite and cable channels, a wardrobe, a private bathroom, a hairdryer and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. A minibar is useful for keeping water or something cold for later, while room service runs on limited hours. Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so the booked room configuration matters here.

Il Rifugio is the hotel’s restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner around Mediterranean cooking. Breakfast is a buffet with continental choices, and the morning spread includes hot and cold food. Lunch and dinner can be taken on the terrace, where the sea view does some of the work that a complicated menu often tries to do.

The restaurant also offers a broad selection of local wines, which is a sensible match for Sardinian dishes and an evening when nobody is in a hurry. The dress code is casual, so you do not need to pack formalwear for dinner; clean clothes and a working appetite will do.

The standard arrangement is half board. There is one bar, Bar Punta Negra, a lobby bar focused on cocktails and wine. A snack bar, minibar, breakfast in the room and limited-hour room service add a few practical options, while vegetarian and gluten-free menus are available. There is no continuous snacking rhythm described here, so plan your meals around the restaurant rather than expecting food at every hour.

The main pool is outdoors, with sun loungers and umbrellas, and there is also a children’s pool. For a slower afternoon, the sun terrace, garden and outdoor seating give you several places to put down a book and stop making decisions. A hot tub and massage service are available when your shoulders need more convincing than a deckchair can provide.

The private beach is the obvious alternative to the pool. You can swim, snorkel, use a kayak or paddleboard, and book boat excursions or equipment rental. The beach is seasonal, available from June to September, and the 16 steps between the hotel and the sand are worth remembering if mobility is a concern.

Away from the water, bicycles, cycling, walking tours and hiking give you ways to use the afternoon without turning it into organised entertainment. Cultural excursions include an Alghero city tour and a trip to Capo Caccia. Live music provides the evening diversion, while babysitting and children’s meals make the arrangement more manageable for families.

Alghero Airport is about a ten-minute drive away. An airport shuttle is available and can be arranged with the hotel. Free private parking is available on site without reservation, and car hire can be organised if you want to explore beyond the immediate coastline. The nearby bus stop is another useful link to Alghero.

Check-in runs from 16:00 and check-out is by 10:00. Private check-in and check-out, a 24-hour front desk, concierge service and luggage storage keep the practical edges fairly tidy, particularly if your travel arrangements do not line up neatly with the room. Free Wi-Fi covers the hotel, and laundry and ironing services are available.

The building has three levels and no lift; upper floors are reached by stairs. The beach itself is reached by 16 steps, so the route from room to sea is not entirely level. Children of any age are welcome, although guests under 18 must check in with a parent or official guardian. Pets are not allowed.
