You are looking at a family hotel set among pines above Marina di Campo, with the bay as part of the view and enough going on to keep a mixed-age group occupied. The atmosphere is sociable rather than hushed: there is a pool, evening entertainment, a games room and a bar that carries on into the evening. For a diver travelling with a partner or family, that matters. Nobody has to sit staring at the same four walls while you are out on the water.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian and German, so you can deal with the practicalities without resorting to underwater hand signals at reception. Hotel Marina 2 has 75 rooms, family facilities and a setting away from summer traffic, while Marina di Campo itself is close enough for beaches, restaurants and the small harbour.

The hotel is in Marina di Campo, on Elba, in the municipality of Campo nell'Elba. It sits in a pine setting about 1.2 miles from the town centre and roughly half a mile on foot from Marina di Campo Beach. A free shuttle also runs to the beach, which saves you the walk when the fins, towel and general post-dive luggage have started to feel heavier than they did that morning.

Marina di Campo Beach stretches for about 1.4 km and has golden sand, shallow gradually deepening water, beach bars, showers, changing facilities, loungers, umbrellas and water-sports equipment hire. The hotel is about 1 mile from Marina di Campo Airport by the nearby route. Further afield, the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano is about 1.7 miles away, while Villa San Martino and the Villa di Napoleone are around 2.7 miles away.

For two people, the double rooms keep the arrangement straightforward, with a king-size bed, air-conditioning, a private bathroom, television, desk, WiFi and a refrigerator. That last item earns its keep when you return hot, salty and ready for cold water rather than conversation. A wardrobe and clothes-drying rack deal with the ordinary business of a beach holiday, while a balcony or patio gives you somewhere to sit outside.

The Superior Double Room is the one to consider if a balcony and a sea view matter to you. The view comes with a realistic Elban footnote: the tall pines provide welcome shade but can obscure much of the gulf. In other words, choose it for the outdoor space and the outlook, not for an uninterrupted postcard panorama.

Families can use the larger family arrangement, while the extra-bed and balcony options suit a small group that wants to stay together. Rooms are air-conditioned and have heating, so recovery after a day in warm water does not depend on hoping the weather takes pity on you. Daily housekeeping is included, and luggage storage helps if your arrival or departure sits awkwardly outside the room hours.

Breakfast and dinner are served buffet-style in the Ristorante Hotel Marina 2, with a choice between an indoor dining room and a panoramic terrace overlooking the bay. Breakfast runs from 07:30 to 10:00 and covers continental and Italian fare: pastries, cakes, yoghurt, cheese, cured meats, eggs, fruit, biscuits, jams, muesli and cereals. It is the sort of spread that lets you build either a sensible start or a plate with ambitions.

Dinner is the fuller affair, with starters, two hot first courses built around fish and meat, two hot main courses, vegetables, salads, dessert and fresh fruit. Regional and local specialities sit alongside international dishes, and the wine list focuses on DOC labels from Elba. Special menus are available for gluten-free diets and allergies, while children's meals are also catered for.

Lunch is handled at the poolside Snack Bar Piscina from 12:30 to 14:00, with hot and cold dishes, salads, filled focaccia and sandwiches. One pool bar serves aperitifs, cocktails, ice cream and snacks from morning into late evening. There is also an on-site coffee house and a bar, so you can keep the post-dive routine simple: food, something cold, and a chair that does not move.

The main outdoor focus is a freshwater seasonal pool open from 09:00 to 19:00, with loungers, sunbeds, umbrellas and a pool bar close at hand. One section reaches 2.40 metres for adults who want to swim properly, while the shallower 1-metre area is intended for children. It is a useful alternative to another trip to the beach when your legs have already had enough of carrying equipment.

You can borrow bicycles for daytime use, play tennis, table tennis, darts, table football or use the games room. The hotel also runs water-based activities such as aqua aerobics and hydrobike, while kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat excursions are available through activities outside the hotel. The tour desk can help with island outings, coastal trips, nearby beaches and cultural visits, including Napoleonic villas, Medici fortresses and museums.

Evenings have a definite family rhythm during the animation period from 13 June to 11 September: group dancing, games, sports tournaments, live music, piano-bar, children’s dancing and a show at 22:00. Children aged four to twelve have an afternoon mini-club from 16:00 to 18:00. For quieter moments, there is a shared lounge, a library and ElbaBrick, a LEGO exhibition-museum with dioramas, models and play areas.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 22:00 and check-out from 08:30 to 11:00. The 24-hour reception, luggage storage and free public parking make the logistics fairly manageable, particularly if you are arriving by car or carrying more holiday equipment than the boot was designed to accept. Parking does not require a reservation, and covered parking is available for motorbikes.

WiFi is free throughout the hotel. You can arrange car or scooter hire, use the laundry service, request a safe at reception and make use of the tour desk. Pets are welcome, including small and medium-sized dogs in rooms with a balcony or enclosed outdoor space; dogs are also permitted on Marina di Campo Beach. The hotel is reached by road from Portoferraio in about 20 to 25 minutes, or from Rio Marina in about 45 to 50 minutes. A free beach shuttle operates during the opening period. If your flight lands at Marina di Campo Airport, the airport is about 1 mile away; the hotel is therefore a practical base for a short transfer rather than a long island crossing.
