Hotel Puerta del Sur

It suits couples looking for a comfortable base and families who want room categories, outdoor space and places for children to play.

The address is Los Lingues 950, Isla Teja, Valdivia, in Chile's Región de Los Ríos. Downtown Valdivia is eight blocks away, so you are close enough for town without being placed directly in its busiest streets.

The Río Cruces wetland is part of the hotel's outlook, while the Pacific coast lies about 8 miles away. Parque Arboretum is around 1 mile from the hotel, and several restaurants are within roughly half a mile, including La Estancilla, El Búnker and Ama Cocina Vegetariana. Valdivia railway station is about 2 miles away.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to use the space. Couples can look towards the double rooms, including the terrace version if stepping outside matters to you. The Superior Twin Room is the sensible option for a small family or friends travelling together, while the Junior Suite gives you a little more room than the standard double category.

The rooms have carpeted floors, upholstered chairs, a wardrobe, flat-screen television, coffee machine, heating and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are modern and marble-finished, with a bath or shower and hairdryer. A proper bath is useful when your legs have had enough of the day's walking, cycling or general Chilean geography.

The restaurant has views towards the Río Cruces, with food and cocktails designed around the region rather than a generic international menu. Its service runs from 12:00 to midnight, with the kitchen closing at 23:00.

The hotel also has a bar, snack bar and room service, giving you alternatives when you would rather stay put. Special-diet menus are available on request, although the restaurant's strongest identity is its local cooking rather than a long list of themed dining options.

The renovated outdoor pool covers 130 square metres, with sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels around it. Add the sun terrace, garden and outdoor fireplace, and you have several places to settle with a book or a drink when the day's main ambition is not to move very far.
