Tocumen International Airport PTY

Tocumen has something most US hubs do not: a free airside shuttle between its two terminals, with no immigration involved. It stops at 21 h. That is the whole issue with an evening connection.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

⭐ Your connection stays airside provided it is not too late.

  • For an international connection on a single ticket, you remain airside: follow the “Connections” signs, pass through one transit security check, and do NOT go through immigration.
  • ⭐ A free shuttle links the gate areas of both terminals without leaving airside: it departs near gates 104 and 105 in Terminal 1, and from the bottom of the stairs opposite gate 209 in Terminal 2. It runs every 15 to 20 min, with a journey time of 10 to 15 min.
  • ⚠️ IT RUNS ONLY FROM 5 H TO 21 H. After that, changing terminals means going landside, passing immigration and then security again. Check this before relying on an evening connection.
  • No minimum connection time is published. For a single ticket, 1 h 30 is the guidebook benchmark.

2–5 hrs

The terminal works well enough but the free Wi-Fi disappears quickly.

  • ⚠️ Free Wi-Fi lasts 30 min to 1 h after registration. Beyond that, you need to buy access. It is the shortest allowance across our 36 airports, so send anything important when you arrive.
  • Waiting areas are functional rather than comfortable: no proper rest area, quiet room or garden.
  • That makes a lounge useful sooner than it would be elsewhere, if only for the connection and a socket.

5–10 hrs

You can go out, but you give up the ease of an airside transit.

  • NO VISA if you remain in the “Connections” flow, you do not pass immigration and have no entry formalities to complete.
  • VISA REQUIRED Panama waives visas for most European passports on a short tourist stay. Check your own passport before you travel.
  • A free landside shuttle links the entrances of both terminals and the metro station from 5 h to 23 h. Panama City and the canal are therefore reachable on a long stopover.
  • ⚠️ Going out means security again on your return, and losing the benefit of protected transit. On a tight connection, it is not the clever calculation.

10 hrs +

You sleep nearby and the airside shuttle will no longer help you.

  • ⚠️ There is no airside hotel at Tocumen. Sleeping means entering Panama.
  • VISA REQUIRED several hotels are a few minutes from the terminal, including one within the immediate airport grounds. Confirm the shuttle and its overnight timetable.
  • ⚠️ Remember that the airside shuttle stops at 21 h: if your onward flight leaves from another terminal early the next morning, allow for the landside journey and security.
  • No airline provides a free overnight programme.

What catches travellers out

The airside shuttle stops at 21 h

It is free, frequent and avoids immigration but it runs only from 5 h to 21 h. Many long-haul flights arrive later. Check before booking an evening connection that changes terminals.

Free Wi-Fi lasts only 30 min

This is the tightest allowance in all our guides. After that, access becomes paid. On a 6 h stopover, it does not even cover the time needed to find your departure gate.

No minimum connection time is published

The airport gives no figure, and the 1 h 30 often quoted is guidebook advice rather than a rule. It also assumes that the airside shuttle is running.

Why not wait it out in peace?

You can buy single-entry access to two lounges at Tocumen, which helps in a terminal built for getting through rather than settling in.

Clear up the first misconception: these lounges are not restricted to passengers of a particular airline. You can buy access whatever ticket you hold.

The terminal offers no proper rest area or quiet room: seats, and that is the lot. On an overnight stop before Bonaire, Cartagena or San Andrés, you will notice the difference.

⚠️ Free Wi-Fi lasts only 30 min to 1 h, after which it becomes paid access. That is the shortest allowance across all our airports. Lounge access includes a connection.

For a diver, the usual case still applies: a socket you can call your own for charging torches and a camera housing before the island.

Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for a few quiet hours.

The diver’s reflex

Dive gear counts as “oversized equipment” unless you have the right status

The local airline places dive equipment in its most tightly controlled category, requiring separate handling and an additional charge. Two points matter. The reassuring one is that the limit is 45 kg and 292 cm combined, well above the usual 32 kg weight is unlikely to stop you here. The other can save you money: members of its frequent-flyer programme and Star Alliance Gold holders can carry this oversized equipment within their allowance. If you fly regularly with a European airline in the same alliance, check your card before reaching for your wallet at the desk. You must also sign a liability waiver, required for every sporting item.

⚠️ Check the time of your connection, not merely its length

This is the most useful fact on the page. The shuttle between the two terminals runs airside, without immigration, but stops at 21 h. An overnight connection between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 therefore means going landside, passing immigration, possibly collecting your luggage, and clearing security again with the dive bag. Check the departure time of your onward flight before booking, not just the gap between flights.

30 min of Wi-Fi is the shortest allowance across all our airports

The free allowance is 30 min to 1 h, then you need to pay. Panama is often your last connected point before Coiba, Bocas del Toro or San Andrés. Tell your dive centre or boat as soon as you land, rather than after a wander around the terminal there is no second chance without reaching for your bank card.

Stay in the “Connections” flow if you can

This is Tocumen’s great advantage over US hubs: an international connection is entirely airside, with no immigration and no need to collect luggage. One security check, and that is it. Do not go landside “for a look”: you would give up the airport’s only structural comfort.
