Doha is the stopover where the waiting has to be planned: past six hours, everything turns on a visa question, and the answer depends on your passport.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
One terminal only but you clear security again, and the far end of the concourse is fourteen minutes away.
- Hamad has just one terminal: no inter-terminal shuttle to worry about, every connection is made on foot.
- Keep camera gear and battery-powered torches in the cabin that's the rule everywhere, and this isn't the moment to reopen a bag.
- ⚠️ TWO OFFICIAL FIGURES CONTRADICT EACH OTHER. Industry timing bases give ninety minutes as the minimum international connection; the hub's own airline quotes forty-five minutes on its own flights, sixty to the United States. Aim for seventy-five to ninety minutes: under an hour it can work, but with no margin at all.
- The bottleneck isn't the distance, it's RE-CLEARING SECURITY: after landing, before reaching the departure zone, everyone goes through a security check again. That's where the queue forms at peak times, and that's where short connections get lost. At busy departure waves, add thirty to forty-five minutes to your margin.
- ⚠️ ON TWO SEPARATE TICKETS, none of this applies: you have to exit landside, clear immigration and check your bags in again. Allow four hours minimum, not forty-five minutes.
2–5 hrs
Enough time to eat and recharge, without leaving the zone.
- The Orchard, the glass-roofed tropical garden at the heart of the terminal, is free to enter: it's the quietest spot you don't pay for.
- The Al Maha Lounge sells by the hour if you'd rather have a seat, a shower and food in one place.
5–10 hrs
This is where the visa decides: head into the city, or settle in airside.
- NO VISA the lounge, the shower and the garden are enough to see out half a day without ever going through immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED the city tours run from the airport (the Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, Katara) need a layover of at least six hours. ⚠️ They come at a cost, and they're only open to those who can enter Qatar: visa-free entry, transit visa, or visa on arrival depending on nationality. Check yours before counting on it.
- The desks sit in the commercial zone; if you've booked ahead, get there well before the stated departure time.
10 hrs +
You sleep. The only question is which side of immigration.
- NO VISA the Oryx Airport Hotel, airside, is bookable by the hour or the night: you never cross immigration, you don't collect checked bags, you go back out through the same door. It's the better choice when the layover is long but the passport is complicated.
- VISA REQUIRED landside airport hotels are noticeably cheaper for comparable comfort, but mean clearing immigration twice, kit and all.
- ⚠️ Qatar Airways puts some passengers up at its own expense on layovers of 8 to 24 hours but it's neither automatic nor universal: ticket fare, booking class and availability all count, and award tickets are excluded. Check your eligibility with the airline BEFORE booking anything: it's their call, not ours.
What catches travellers out
The lounge you saw on video isn't for sale
Doha's most filmed lounges are the business-class ones. They don't sell by the seat: you get in with your ticket or your status. Check the exact name before you make the trip.
Getting into the city isn't a formality
Leaving the airport depends on your nationality. An eight-hour layover is only worth a city trip if your passport allows it.
Why not wait it out in peace?
In Doha, only one lounge sells by the hour without a card or status: the Al Maha Lounge.
Hamad's hall is vast and bright, but it's also noisy and the sockets get fought over. Past five hours, the question stops being comfort it's whether you can put the kit down and sleep for an hour without watching your bag.
Other places advertised in Doha under the word 'lounge' are spas: you buy a massage there, not a seat and a meal. We don't list them.
The business-class lounges Al Mourjan, the Oryx Lounge aren't for sale: you get in with your ticket or your status. Plenty of videos show them off; none tell you they're closed to you.
Budget the cost of a sit-down meal at the airport for three to five hours of peace.

- It's bookable by the hour or the night: a seven-hour layover might only need paying for four.
- You don't collect checked baggage and you go back out through the same door the obvious choice when your passport makes the exit complicated.

- Factor in the journey, the immigration queue both there AND back, and hauling the kit the whole way.
- Only worth considering if your nationality gets you into Qatar, and if the layover is long enough that the night justifies the double crossing.
The diver’s reflex
Seven kilos in the cabin, and your dive bag weighs twelve
It's the most awkward gap on this layover. In economy, the home carrier allows only one 7 kg cabin piece, sized 50 × 37 × 25 cm. Yet the regulator, the computer, the housing and the batteries everything that never goes in the hold routinely weigh double that. The way out is written into the rule itself: an additional personal item is still allowed if it fits under the seat in front of you. Sort it out the night before, not in front of the agent: regulator and computer underneath, everything else in the piece that gets weighed.
Two power banks, one hundred watt-hours, and definitely not in the overhead locker
Since June 2026, it's Qatar's civil aviation authority that sets the rule, and it applies to every departure from Doha regardless of your airline: two power banks maximum, 100 Wh each, cabin only, never in the hold, and no charging in flight. There's a requirement you'll barely meet anywhere else: they must stay within reach, not in the locker above you and not in a side pocket, so the crew can act on them without delay. A big housing recharge pack goes over 100 Wh without warning read the marking at home.
There's nowhere to leave the bag without entering Qatar
The airport publishes no left-luggage facility in its terminal, and that's worth knowing on its own. What does exist sits landside, near the metro station so past immigration, so under visa conditions. In transit, the only way to put down fifteen kilos of cabin baggage is to get into a lounge with lockers. On a nine-hour layover, that's not a comfort question: it decides whether you spend the day with the kit on your shoulder.
