Captain Morgan’s Dive School Utila

Captain Morgan’s Dive School has been a fixture of the Utila diving community since 1997. Located on a private beach just a five-minute walk from the Utila Dream ferry terminal, the centre provides a dedicated base for those looking to explore the Honduras coast.

The school is positioned near the Caribbean Market and various local restaurants, offering a balance of seclusion and easy access to the island's amenities. It serves as a practical hub for both students working through their certifications and experienced divers looking for structured fun dives.

The centre is built on a foundation of significant industry experience, with the owner and manager bringing a combined total of over 50 years to the operation. This expertise is reflected in their approach to both recreational and professional training.

The instructor team focuses on small group sizes, maintaining a ratio of no more than six divers per guide. This ensures personalised attention during training sessions and guided dives. The school is affiliated with SSI and provides instruction in English and Spanish.

The school offers a comprehensive range of SSI courses catering to every stage of a diver's development. Beginners can start with Try Scuba Diving, Scuba Diver, or the Open Water Diver certification. Progression continues through Advanced Adventurer, Deep Diving, Navigation Diver, and Night Diver.

For those looking to refine their skills, specific training is available in Perfect Buoyancy and Enriched Air Nitrox. The centre also supports professional pathways, offering courses for Dive Guide and Divemaster. More specialised training includes Wreck Diver and Stress and Rescue.

The centre provides full equipment hire for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and torches for night diving.

On-site, Enriched Air Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom times. The facility also includes a fully equipped kitchen and access to kayaks for use on the water.

The reefs around Utila are home to a variety of large pelagics and resident species. You can regularly encounter eagle rays, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and moray eels patrolling the reef structures. Tropical fish provide constant colour throughout the dive sites.

Between March and April, as well as August and October, the area becomes a significant location for whale shark sightings. These seasonal visitors are a primary draw for divers during these specific windows.

The marine environment is further enriched by a diverse array of small resident fish and corals that form the backbone of the local ecosystem.

The best time to visit Utila is throughout the year, though the months of May to July typically offer calmer and warmer waters. If you are looking to coincide your trip with whale shark sightings, aim for the March–April or August–October windows.

It is generally advised to avoid the period from late October to January due to the rainy season.
