Pavalintang Resort is a small overwater retreat in Semporna, with only five private water chalets above the Celebes Sea. You come here for the setting: wooden rooms, open water, a reef below the deck and a pace set by boats, meals and the light over Sabah. The scale matters. With so few chalets, the resort keeps the stay intimate and gives you a private deck for watching the water, taking photographs or simply sitting down with a coffee. English and Chinese are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the practical details in English from arrival onwards.

You stay in Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia, directly over the water rather than beside a conventional sandy beach. A boat from Semporna town takes about 30 minutes, placing the resort out in the Celebes Sea and within the Coral Triangle. The access is part of the geography: town is reached by boat, not by wandering down the road after dinner.

Tawau Airport is the nearest air connection, 42 miles away. From there, the road journey to Semporna takes nearly two hours before the boat transfer begins. Lahad Datu Airport is 46 miles away, while the restaurants and cafés around Semporna town are around 7 to 8 miles from the resort by the listed route.

Every chalet puts you directly above the Celebes Sea, with sea-view windows, a balcony, a patio and a private overwater deck. The room is arranged for two, with a king-size bed, a private bathroom and a hot shower. Parquet flooring, a clothes rack, a socket beside the bed and outdoor furniture keep things practical rather than fussy.

The real choice is straightforward: take this style of room if you want the sea to be part of the night and the first thing you see in the morning. The balcony gives you a place to sit above the reef, while the private deck makes it easy to step outside before breakfast for a look at the water. A fan is provided, and the resort’s full description also lists air conditioning, a flat-screen television, a work area and a welcome fruit arrangement.

Daily housekeeping keeps the room reset while you are out, and the private bathroom includes towels, a bidet and toiletries. For families, children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available; in practice, the accommodation suits couples or a small family arrangement that works with the existing beds.

Island Dining serves all three daily meals, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included as part of the full-board arrangement. You eat outdoors or on the terrace, with a cosy indoor area available when you prefer shade or shelter. There is no separate bar to plan around, so the restaurant is where the day’s food and drink routine happens.

Breakfast mixes Western and Malaysian favourites, with made-to-order eggs, tropical fruit and traditional sweet treats. Lunch turns to grilled fish, spicy sambal dishes and stir-fried greens, while dinner brings regional recipes, aromatic curries, grilled prawns and warm soups. The kitchen works with local Sabahan ingredients and freshly caught seafood, with the menu changing according to the fishermen’s daily catch.

That makes the table particularly well suited to a remote stay: you do not need to organise three separate meals around boat movements. Dietary requirements can be discussed with the team when you book.

The house reef starts directly below the chalets, so snorkelling is available without turning the afternoon into a logistical exercise. You also have sea kayaking, canoeing, fishing, island hopping and boat trips to neighbouring islands, with water-sport facilities on site. Guided snorkelling sessions can be arranged for a closer look at the reef below the viewing areas.

On land, the programme includes the Bohey Dulang Volcano Hike and other excursions around the Semporna islands. Trips cover Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Mabul and Kapalai, as well as Mataking, Timba-Timba and Pom Pom. Wildlife observation and photography from the viewing platform give you options for a slower day, while ocean sunsets and the coffee station are well suited to the part of the holiday where your fins stay in the bag.

There is also a shared lounge and television area, a sun terrace, outdoor seating and a picnic area. The resort is family-friendly, but the activities are naturally centred on the sea and the islands rather than organised children’s entertainment.

The usual route is by air to Tawau, followed by the road transfer to Semporna and then the boat from the town jetty. The resort provides a complimentary airport shuttle and a complimentary boat transfer from Semporna, with flight details needed so the boat can be ready for your arrival. Private taxis and shared vans are available at Tawau Airport for the road leg.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 17:00, and check-out from 08:00 to 12:30. A 24-hour front desk, private check-in and check-out, concierge service, a tour desk and luggage storage make the travel-day mechanics easier to manage. Packed lunches are available for days when an excursion starts before the table does.

The property has full-day security, key access and daily housekeeping. Bring Malaysian Ringgit cash for extras, as there is no ATM at the resort. The boat schedule should be confirmed with the team before travelling, particularly if flights and onward excursions need to line up neatly.
