Tioman Dive Buddy

Located in Kampung Genting on Tioman Island, Tioman Dive Buddy has been a cornerstone of the local diving community since 2010. As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre, it occupies a high tier of professional accreditation, making it a primary hub for both recreational enthusiasts and those pursuing professional diving careers.

The centre is ideally positioned for easy access, situated just a five-minute walk from the Kampung Genting jetty. Whether you arrive via ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, or take a domestic flight into Tioman Airport, the transition to the dive shop is seamless.

The team consists of eight experienced instructors capable of conducting a wide range of training in English, Chinese, Malay, and Cantonese. This multilingual capability ensures clear communication for a diverse international clientele.

Safety and structure are central to their operation, maintaining a strict ratio of one guide for every four divers. This small group size allows for more personalised instruction and better control during drift dives or when navigating more complex topography.

The centre also operates the TDB Tioman Resort, providing integrated accommodation options that range from modern container-style rooms with WiFi 6 and air conditioning to traditional wooden chalets in tropical gardens.

Tioman Dive Buddy offers a comprehensive educational programme through PADI. For those starting their journey, they provide Discover Scuba Diving and the Open Water Diver course, with combined Open Water and Advanced Open Water packages available.

For experienced divers, the curriculum expands into technical and professional territory. They offer Sidemount, Deep & Deco, and the full technical progression through Tec 40, Tec 45, and Tec 50 & Trimix. Professional candidates can undertake the full path from Divemaster through to the Instructor Development Course (IDC).

The centre also caters to niche interests, offering PADI Freediver and Mermaid specialties, alongside dedicated Wreck diver training.

The centre operates three boats to service its various dive sites. These vessels allow the team to reach the island's diverse range of reefs, pinnacles, and wrecks efficiently.

The facility is set up to support both recreational and technical diving. Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom times, and the centre also supports technical training with Trimix capabilities.

Service at the centre is designed to be efficient; the team handles the transport and assembly of equipment, allowing you to focus on your dive preparation.

The marine life around Tioman is diverse, ranging from large pelagics to intricate reef inhabitants. You will regularly encounter Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), turtles, and large schools of Jack (Carangidae) and Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) near the deeper pinnacles.

The reef structures are heavily populated by Snapper (Lutjanus), Fusilier (Caesio), and various species of Angelfish (Pomacanthidae) and Wrasse (Labridae). You can also find Butterflyfish and various species of Cuttlefish (Sepiidae) amongst the corals.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a variety of Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), lionfish, and scorpionfish. Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani) can also be found tucked into the reef architecture, alongside various moray eels and green moray eels (Gymnothorax funebris).

The optimal window for diving on Tioman is from March to November. During this period, the swell remains calm and the water conditions are most favourable for diving.

Divers should be prepared for moderate currents, particularly at sites like Tiger Reef, which can lead to drift diving. It is best to avoid the island during the monsoon season, which typically runs from November to February.
