Duikschool de Grevelingen about the centre

Located in Scharendijke, Zeeland, Duikschool de Grevelingen sits at the gateway to some of the most unique diving environments in the Netherlands. The centre is positioned perfectly to access the Grevelingenmeer, Europe's largest saltwater lake, and the diverse marine habitats of the Oosterschelde.

With over 25 years of experience in the region, the centre has built a reputation for technical competence and personal attention. They operate as an SSI Dive Center, an SSI Blue Oceans Center dedicated to marine environmental protection, and an SSI Classified Diving Center, meaning they are equipped to support divers with reduced mobility or sensory limitations.

The club and its team

The centre prioritises a low diver-to-guide ratio to ensure safety and individualised instruction. In open water, you will never be in a group larger than two divers per instructor, and for introductory dives, the instructor remains one-on-one with the diver.

As an SSI Classified Diving Center, the team is trained to accommodate divers with specific accessibility needs. Their long-standing presence in Zeeland ensures that the instruction is grounded in a deep understanding of the local conditions and underwater topography.

Courses on offer

The centre offers a complete range of SSI training programmes. You can begin your journey with the Open Water Diver course and progress through to Advanced Open Water Diver, Diver Stress & Rescue, and eventually the Divemaster level.

Specialised training is also available to refine your skills, including Dry Suit Diving, Perfect Buoyancy, Night Diving, and the Science of Diving. For those interested in ecology, they offer Ecology Specialties, and they are also trained to deliver the SSI React Right programme.

Equipment and gases

The centre is integrated with the 'divestore de Grevelingen', the largest diving shop in the south-west of the Netherlands. This provides divers with access to a comprehensive range of equipment, from regulators to exposure suits, available for hire by appointment.

For those looking to extend their bottom time, Nitrox is available on-site. The facility is well-equipped to handle the needs of both students and experienced divers looking to utilise enriched air for their excursions.

Dive sites with Duikschool de Grevelingen

The Frans Kok Rif is a well-known local site named after a local diver, offering interesting structures to explore. It is a popular location for those looking to see the local marine life in a familiar setting.

At the Zeelandbrug, you can dive around the bridge pillars in the Oosterschelde. This site is known for being full of marine life, though divers should be prepared for the possibility of strong currents in this area.

The Gemaal of Dreischor provides a different experience within the Grevelingenmeer, featuring beautifully overgrown structures on the seabed that offer plenty of interest for both novice and experienced divers.

Anna Jacobapolder offers the chance to dive amongst oyster beds and explore the area surrounding the old ferry harbour, providing a unique look at the local maritime history and ecology.

Diving conditions

Diving conditions vary significantly between the two main areas. The Grevelingenmeer is a saltwater lake where you can expect almost no current, making it an ideal environment for controlled training and relaxed exploration.

In contrast, the Oosterschelde can present more challenging conditions, with the potential for strong currents, particularly around structures like the Zeelandbrug. The best period for diving in this region is from mid-April to mid-October.
