The coast is doing plenty of the work already.

The hotel suits divers who want Ilfracombe rather than a purpose-built dive lodge. You get the harbour and local restaurants within walking distance, North Devon and Exmoor for days out, and practical touches such as room service, a lift, free WiFi and private parking. The maritime harbour and quay are around a ten-minute walk away. For a change of scenery, Watermouth Castle is about 5 km away, Exmoor begins around 6 km away, and Bull Point Lighthouse is roughly 6 km from the hotel.

If you arrive by train, Barnstaple station is about 18 km away. Exeter International Airport is about 64 miles from the hotel. By road, the approach is via the M5, junction 27, then the A361 towards Barnstaple.

The room choice is genuinely useful rather than decorative. Travelling alone, you can take the Single Room and keep the booking proportionate to the amount of floor space one diver actually needs. As a couple, the King Room or King Suite gives you the larger bed; the Queen Room keeps things simpler. Twin beds are available when sharing a room does not mean sharing a mattress, which is a small but important distinction after several days in the water.

For three guests, the Triple Room or Accessible Room combines a double or king-size bed with a single bed. The Family Room adds a bunk bed to a king-size bed, making it the practical option for a family group. There are also facilities for disabled guests, including wheelchair access, an accessible room, a lift, level access and bathroom features such as grab rails, a raised toilet, a lower sink and an emergency cord.

The hotel also has a restaurant and bar for the evenings when staying in is the more appealing plan; Ilfracombe’s nearby restaurants give you alternatives when it is not.

The fitness centre is there for the more energetic version of your rest day, with fitness facilities and a personal trainer. For the less heroic option, the wellness menu includes full-body, couples, head, neck, back, hand and foot massages, as well as a massage chair. There are also facial and body treatments, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, hair treatments and light therapy. In other words, you can repair the effects of a week spent in kit without having to leave the building.

The wider setting is better suited to walking than to manufactured entertainment. Hiking around North Devon and the coast is available, as are cycling, fishing, horse riding and golf, with a golf course within about 3 miles. Bicycle rental is available, and the hotel can also offer excursions involving a boat trip, an island, a waterfall, a market or snorkelling. Temporary art galleries and themed dinner nights provide quieter alternatives when your legs have had enough of both fins and hills.

For couples, the combination works well: one person can take a massage while the other heads out along the coast, then you can meet for dinner. Families have family rooms, children of any age are welcome, and children’s meals are available. Pets are also allowed, with the hotel providing pet bowls and a basket.
