If your idea of a proper island stay involves space, privacy and the ability to make your own coffee before anyone starts talking, Ocean Paradise is built along those lines. The resort consists of large three-bedroom homes, with room for families, couples travelling together or a group of friends who would rather share a house than a corridor of identical hotel rooms.

The mood is deliberately unhurried. Ocean views, a garden, a furnished terrace and hammocks on the porches give you several ways to do absolutely nothing, which is often the correct answer on a Caribbean afternoon. You are in Brinkleys, on the north side of Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, at 1234 Rum Point Road. The property sits directly beside the sea, with direct access to a white-sand beach equipped with loungers and parasols. Rum Point Beach is around 150 metres away by road, so the coast is not something you need to organise an excursion to find.

This is a quieter, more spread-out part of the island rather than a town-centre base. Rum Point National Heritage Trail is about 1 mile away, while Mastic Trail is roughly 4.6 miles away. Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is around 5 miles away, and the eastern side of Grand Cayman gives you access to further beaches and outdoor stops by car.

The surrounding dining and activity options are part of the appeal, but a car will make the area considerably easier to use. Water Cay Public Beach is about 3.1 miles away and Old Man Bay Beach around 4.3 miles away; the resort itself already puts you on the beach, so these are alternatives rather than essentials.

These are homes rather than compact rooms: three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a den and a fully equipped kitchen give you the sort of layout that works when everyone has luggage, wet clothes and different ideas about bedtime. The beachfront house is the obvious choice if stepping straight towards the sea matters most; the other homes suit groups who want the same amount of living space with a different outlook.

The kitchens come with a coffee maker, microwave and fridge. That matters when you return hot, hungry and not especially interested in hunting down breakfast before a boat departure. A private entrance, flat-screen cable TV with DVD player and free Wi-Fi in the rooms cover the less glamorous but useful parts of the evening, while three private bathrooms make a full house of divers much easier to manage.

Air conditioning is available throughout the accommodation, helping you cool down properly after sun, salt and a day outside. The homes have a basic decorative style rather than a themed resort interior, and the larger properties provide the privacy and domestic convenience of a holiday home. White-sand beachfront, ocean views and a terrace give you somewhere to sit when the sensible plan is an early night but the sunset has other ideas.

The kitchen gives you control over breakfast, packed lunches and the occasional post-dive meal assembled with whatever remains in the fridge. Food shopping can be arranged, and barbecue facilities let you keep dinner outside when the weather is doing its part. A formal meal plan is not listed, so this is a self-catering set-up with restaurants to explore rather than a wristband-and-buffet operation.

For lunch and dinner, the dining choices include Kaibo Yacht Club Restaurant and Beach Bar, a casual beach spot with finer dining upstairs, and Over the Edge Restaurant, where fresh wahoo leads a menu of local dishes. Italian Kitchen covers farm-to-table Italian food for eating in or taking away. Morrit’s Tortuga Club adds beachfront dining, a bar and live entertainment on some evenings.

The wider selection keeps things from becoming repetitive. The Lighthouse Restaurant combines Italian cooking with local seafood beside the sea and also serves Sunday brunch; Tukka Restaurant and Bar offers Australian-style dishes including conch and crocodile fritters, while The Taco Catina takes a more straightforward taco route. The White House in Bodden Town pairs dining and drinks with use of its pool, and The Czech Inn Grill mixes Caribbean and Czech cooking.

The most convincing non-diving activity here may be the one requiring the least organisation: a hammock on the porch, the garden around you and the sea within sight. Sun loungers, parasols and a furnished terrace make it easy to settle in without turning relaxation into another timetable. There is also one outdoor swimming pool, although essential repairs and construction work are scheduled during September and October, so check the situation if pool time is central to your plans.

When sitting still loses its charm, the resort offers kayaks and paddleboards, as well as sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet-ski activities. Fishing, boat excursions and snorkelling are also available, with the nearby water providing plenty of scope for a quieter surface day. Kayak rental and bike rental give you two less energetic ways to see more of the area.

Excursions can take you towards an island, a waterfall, a market or a snorkelling stop, while fishing offers a more focused day on the water. For evenings indoors, board games and puzzles are a simple option, particularly when the group has run out of energy but is not ready for bed.

Owen Roberts International Airport is about 21 miles away by road, with the property description placing the drive at roughly 15 minutes. The resort offers free on-site public parking, and car rental is available, making independent travel around the north and east of Grand Cayman straightforward. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

Check-in starts at 16:00 and check-out is by 11:00. The minimum age for check-in is 25, and children of any age are welcome; extra beds can be requested for children and adults, subject to the accommodation selected, while cots are not available. Pets are not allowed, and payment is by card rather than cash.

A refundable damage deposit is taken by card before arrival and returned after check-out once the property has been inspected. Cancellation and prepayment rules vary with the accommodation chosen, so read the conditions attached to your selected home before confirming. Laundry and luggage storage are also available, useful when your flight times do not line up neatly with the house timetable.
