Stingray City, Grand Cayman: Interact with Southern Stingrays

Stingray City is a shallow sandbar in the protected waters of Grand Cayman’s North Sound. Historically, this location became a gathering point for Southern Stingrays (Hypanus americanus) as fishermen would clean their catches nearby, discarding fish remnants into the water. Over time, these animals became habituated to human presence and interaction, establishing Stingray City as a unique dive and snorkel site where direct contact with the stingrays is a key experience.

The site itself is a sandbar, reaching a maximum depth of 3.6 metres. This shallow profile makes it accessible for divers of all experience levels, including those who prefer to remain at the surface with snorkelling gear. You can often stand in waist-deep water, surrounded by Southern Stingrays as they glide through the aquamarine, crystal-clear water. This high visibility, often exceeding typical reef conditions, enhances the experience, allowing for detailed observation of their behaviour.

Interaction with the resident stingrays is the primary draw here. Divers and snorkelers can observe them closely, often feeding and gently touching them as they navigate the sandy bottom. The population includes a steady group of 20 to 30 Southern Stingrays that regularly frequent the site. These interactions occur daily, solidifying their comfort and familiarity with human presence, making for a consistent and reliable encounter.

Beyond the stingrays, the sandbar environment supports a variety of other marine life. You will frequently encounter tropical fish schooling around the interaction areas, drawn by the same food sources. Look out for Green Morays (Gymnothorax funebris) that often reside in the area, Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) passing through, and various species of barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). The occasional Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) also visit the shallows, adding to the diversity.

The conditions at Stingray City are generally calm, situated within the protected barrier reef of the North Sound. This shelter from oceanic surge and strong currents ensures a relaxed environment for both the marine life and the divers. The focus here is on slow, observational diving, allowing ample time for photography and videography, capturing the clear water and the close-up interactions with the stingrays and other fauna without contending with demanding conditions.
