The Canyon dive site, located within Sosúa Bay, is structured around a prominent rocky pinnace on a sandy bottom, setting it apart from typical reef dives. Entering at its shallower end, you begin your exploration near this central rock formation, famously known as Rob's Rock, where light often filters through, presenting opportunities for underwater photographers. This initial section provides a calm entry point for acclimatisation, allowing you to observe the resident schooling fish that congregate around the rock’s shelters.
As you move further into the site, the Canyon reveals its namesake feature: a distinct fissure in the reef that serves as a gateway to deeper waters. Passing through this geological cut, you immediately notice the change in topography as the a diverse population of reef fish, including French grunts (Haemulon flavolineatum), recede with your descent. This transition marks the shift from a brightly lit, inner-reef environment to the more expansive, darker profile of the deeper wall.
Once through the fissure, you have the option to follow the wall either towards the imposing cliffs of Los Charamicos or in the opposite direction. This deeper section of the site offers a varied topography, with large barrel sponges providing prominent landmarks. Keep an eye out for an encrusted anchor, possibly dating back centuries, which serves as a historical marker embedded in the environment.
The site truly earns its name where you can navigate through the canyon itself, allowing for a unique perspective on the reef structure. This passage guides you through a natural channel, enabling a northern or southern heading depending on your plan. The protected environment of the bay allows for conditions that generally support coral conservation efforts, as seen in the work carried out by local ecological foundations, including the placement of a statue.
Depths at the Canyon vary, starting at 9 metres and extending down to 30 metres. The site is accessible to divers of all levels, from novice to experienced, largely due to generally calm currents within Sosúa Bay. Visibility typically ranges from 18 to 30 metres, with the clearest and warmest waters experienced between May and September.
