Windward Mayreau Resort

Windward Mayreau Resort is a small, adults-only base on Mayreau, with 15 handcrafted bungalows and the sea at the front door. The mood comes from the setting and the design rather than a packed programme: Tulum-inspired lines, Bali craftsmanship, a garden, a pool and direct access to the beach.

You can spend the day in and around the water, then retreat to a private bungalow with air conditioning, a terrace and a sea view. It suits divers who want the hotel itself to stay low-key, and couples who would rather hear the water than a timetable of organised entertainment.

The resort is built for a slower Caribbean stay, with a restaurant, a bar, loungers and outdoor spaces close at hand. Children are not allowed, so the atmosphere is firmly aimed at adults.

The resort is in Mayreau, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, directly on the coast between Salt Whistle Bay and the Tobago Cays. You have direct access to a white-sand beach, with sun loungers and parasols already part of the beach set-up.

Carnash Bay Beach is about 650 metres away, roughly an eight-minute walk. The location is more about bays, reefs and boat access than about wandering into a town for errands; the nearest listed restaurant, Robert Righteous & de Youths Seafood Restaurant & Bar, is about 0.8 miles away.

Getting there is part of the geography. The route runs via St Vincent or Barbados, then a connecting flight to Union Island followed by a boat to Mayreau. Argyle International Airport is 90 km away, while Union Island Airport is about 3.3 miles from the resort.

The accommodation is bungalow-based, with the choice essentially coming down to how close you want to feel to the sand and how much of the sea you want in the view. A Beach Front Bungalow makes sense if stepping straight towards the shore is your priority; the Sea View option suits you if the outlook matters more than being right at beach level.

Both categories are designed for two adults, and the units are on the ground floor. That keeps arrival and departure simple, particularly when you are carrying the usual collection of bags, shoes and things that should have dried by now. A private entrance, terrace, outdoor furniture and seating area give you somewhere to sit without turning the room into a storage cupboard.

Air conditioning and a fan cover the warmer part of the day, while soundproofing should help keep the night from becoming an accidental social event. There is a private bathroom with a shower, towels, toiletries, a hairdryer and a bidet. A fridge, coffee machine, kettle and tea-and-coffee facilities are useful for cold water and the first drink before breakfast; WiFi and a flat-screen TV deal with the moments when even the sea has lost your attention.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with brunch and high tea also part of the day’s rhythm. Breakfast is à la carte, which is a more civilised arrangement than being expected to negotiate a buffet while still thinking about the first dive.

The cooking is Mediterranean, with fresh-caught seafood at the centre of the offer. The restaurant sits on a terrace beneath a teak-stick ceiling, with reclaimed teak furniture and an oceanfront setting that does the visual work without requiring a dress code or a speech about it.

There is one bar, described as a beach bar and also used for poolside drinks, with cocktails on the list. French Champagne, Loire Valley wines, craft beers and Windward IPA cover the important post-dive question of whether the evening should begin with something cold, something sparkling or both.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place for a quiet hour between activities, with a sun terrace, loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels available. The pool is also presented as a spot for a midday nap or a slow drink, which is a perfectly respectable use of an afternoon when your legs have already done their share of the work.

On the water, you can go snorkelling, paddleboarding, kiteboarding, fishing or out by boat. Island and snorkelling excursions are available, while the beach itself is directly accessible from the resort. The setting around Tobago Cays and Salt Whistle Bay gives those outings a clear reason to exist rather than turning them into filler on a facilities list.

If you prefer to stay on dry land, there is a gym and yoga. The garden and outdoor seating offer quieter alternatives, and the restaurant and bar are close enough that a supposedly short walk does not need to become an expedition.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 20:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, with daily housekeeping and luggage storage making the travel days easier to manage.

An airport shuttle service is available to arrange with the resort. The wider journey involves flights to St Vincent or Barbados, a connecting flight to Union Island and a boat to Mayreau, so this is not a drop-the-car-at-the-gate sort of arrival. Allow the island geography to set the pace.

WiFi is free throughout the resort. Cash is not accepted, and the property does not allow children, pets or parties. The bungalows are non-smoking, with a designated smoking area on the property.

Windward Mayreau uses desalinated seawater and solar panels. The solar installation supplies the resort’s energy system, while desalination provides its water rather than relying solely on mainland-style infrastructure.

It is a practical approach for a small island property, and one that fits the setting: the sea is part of the view, part of the journey and part of the resource planning too.
