D' Love Shack

D' Love Shack is a self-contained cabin for two, set directly on Castara Beach. You get your own bedroom, kitchen, living area and covered balcony rather than a conventional hotel room, with the beach and sea views doing most of the work outside.

The place has a distinctly local story. A mother-and-son project that began as a wooden hut on the beach, it was renovated and began welcoming guests in February 2025. The result keeps the rustic feel of timber and tropical beach living, while adding practical comforts for a stay where you can set your own timetable.

This is an adults-only address in practice: children are not allowed, and the minimum age for check-in is 18. It suits a couple who would rather have a private base, a proper kitchen and the sea immediately beyond the garden than a large resort with a timetable for everything.

You are in Castara, Tobago, on Northside Road and directly on the sandy Castara Beach. The sea is not a distant view from the property; it is the immediate foreground. Little Bay Beach is about 0.1 miles away, while Englishman's Bay Beach is about 1.7 miles away by the mapped route.

Castara village centre is about a minute away. That puts bars, shops, supermarkets and restaurants within easy reach when cooking feels like unnecessary ambition. The Coffee Shop is about 0.1 miles away, Cascreole Bar & Beach Club about 0.2 miles, and Caribbean Kitchen at Castara Retreats about 0.2 miles.

The village is also part of the attraction. Traditional net fishing remains part of local life, and bread is sold weekly from a traditional clay oven. Castara's calendar includes African drumming on Wednesdays, Bun Fire on Thursdays, and live pan music with a barbecue at Cheno's on Saturdays.

There is one apartment-style cabin, designed for two people and arranged around a large en-suite bedroom, a separate fitted kitchen and a covered balcony. The bedroom uses locally sourced cypress boards for a wooden, slightly rustic finish, with tiled flooring and an enclosed glass shower. It is a proper little base rather than a room with a kettle pushed into a corner.

The balcony faces the beach and comes with patio chairs, so you can take your first coffee outside without negotiating the morning with anyone else. A patio, terrace, garden and outdoor dining area extend the living space, while the private entrance and ground-floor layout keep things straightforward when you are carrying bags, towels or the general debris of a day beside the water.

Inside, you have a sofa, dining area, flat-screen TV, free WiFi, a fan and a mosquito net. The kitchen includes an oven, stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle and kitchenware. That refrigerator matters when you come back hot and thirsty; the fan and mosquito net matter when the evening is warm and the windows are open. A bath and shower, towels, toiletries, wardrobe and laptop safe round out the practical side of the stay.

The hotel is a self-catering stay, with an independent kitchen rather than an in-house restaurant or bar. You can make breakfast before heading out, put together something simple when you return, or use the dining area and covered outdoor space for a meal that does not require a reservation or a dress code.

The kitchen is better equipped than the token kitchenette found in many beach apartments: there is an oven, stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, electric kettle and kitchenware. Tea and coffee facilities are also available. In other words, you can keep things simple, but you are not limited to assembling food with a butter knife.

When cooking is off the agenda, the village is close enough to provide alternatives. The Coffee Shop, Cascreole Bar & Beach Club and Caribbean Kitchen at Castara Retreats are all within roughly 0.2 miles. Their presence gives you somewhere to go for food or a drink without turning the evening into a transport exercise.

The main activity is the beach, and it starts at the property boundary. Sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas are available, while the garden, terrace and balcony give you several places to sit when you want shade, a view or simply a different chair. Castara Beach is also used for snorkelling, so you can stay close to shore when you want time in the water without arranging a full excursion.

For a slower afternoon, there is an open-air bath and massage is available on site. The outdoor fireplace gives the property a useful evening feature, particularly when the village is providing the entertainment elsewhere. Fishing is also available off site.

Castara supplies the social side without the need for a resort programme. African drumming on Wednesdays, Bun Fire on Thursdays and live pan music with a barbecue at Cheno's on Saturdays offer genuine local diversions. You can join in, or remain on the balcony and let the village make the noise for you.

A.N.R. Robinson International Airport is about 18 miles away, with the drive taking around 32 minutes. Free public parking is available on site, and WiFi is free throughout the property. Pets are welcome without an additional charge, which makes this a practical option if your travel companion has four legs and no interest in snorkelling.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 20:00, and you need to let the property know your arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 11:00 to 12:00. Cash is not accepted, so arrange your payment accordingly before arrival.

The property generally requires a minimum stay of four nights in high season and two nights in low season. Parties and events are not allowed, and the cabin does not accommodate hen or stag parties. Cot and extra-bed facilities are not available, which fits the adults-only arrangement and the two-person layout.
