The M.V. Maverick, locally remembered as the 'Scarlet Ibis', lies submerged on Tobago's tranquil Caribbean side, a deliberate artificial reef far from the stronger currents often found on the island's Atlantic coast. This vessel, a former passenger ferry that once shuttled between Trinidad and Tobago, was intentionally prepared and sunk in the 1990s. Its transformation from a working ship to a thriving underwater ecosystem is now complete, offering a unique opportunity to explore a tangible piece of the islands' maritime history.
Your dive begins with a descent line secured directly to the wreck's bow, guiding you down towards the upper sections of the ferry. From the surface, the M.V. Maverick's outline slowly materialises, shifting from a dark shadow into a discernible structure as you approach. The highest point of the wreck is found at 18 metres, marking the start of your exploration, before the rest of the vessel slopes towards its maximum depth of 30 metres, where the hull rests firmly on the seabed.
As you make your way down, you will often find yourself passing through dense schools of baitfish that shimmer and move as one, creating a living curtain around the wreck. These vast aggregations attract predatory bonitos (Sarda sarda), which can be seen darting in and out of the schools with remarkable speed and precision, actively feeding. These dynamic interactions are a constant feature around the M.V. Maverick, offering a lively spectacle as you approach the main wreck structure.
Keep an eye out for larger predators that frequent the M.V. Maverick; it is a known habitat for impressive cobias (Rachycentron canadum), often encountered patrolling the decks and internal structures. These powerful fish move with an unhurried confidence through the wreck's skeletal remains, occasionally making closer passes. You may also spot amberjacks and barracudas, often holding position just off the wreck, observing the activity around them.
The wreck itself provides a home to various resident species, including intricate reef-building crabs and the distinctive arrow crabs (Stenorhynchus seticornis), their long, delicate legs a familiar sight nestled in crevices. Creole wrasse, brown chromis, and striped grunts are common around the superstructure, while mangrove snappers and green morays find shelter within the wreck's many openings. Clams (Bivalvia) are firmly attached to the wreck's surfaces, filtering the clear Caribbean waters.
The M.V. Maverick lies upright on a featureless seabed, making its structure easy to navigate and explore. The wreck is largely intact, allowing for various swim-throughs and access to internal spaces. For appropriately trained and experienced divers, penetration into the ship, including access to the engine rooms, is possible, adding another dimension to the exploration of this submerged ferry.
