This is a good fit if you want your diving holiday to include a little more than a bed, a shower and somewhere to dry your towel.

The tone is polished but not precious. You can have breakfast overlooking the sea, disappear to a quieter beach, play tennis, book a massage or simply find a chair and stop moving for a while. Families are well catered for, but couples and golfers have plenty of room to do their own thing. If the sea is part of the reason you came, look towards an ocean-view or oceanfront category; the Great House Ocean View places the emphasis on the historic heart of the property, while the Deluxe Oceanfront Garden View combines a seafront position with garden outlooks. For a couple wanting more room to settle in, the suites are the obvious step up. Larger family-oriented options are available too, without forcing everyone into a single standard room and a nightly game of luggage Tetris.

Whistle Beach is the most secluded, with no structures, which is useful when your ideal afternoon involves a book, a chair and no timetable. Snorkelling equipment, kayaks, paddleboards, floating mats, showers, changing rooms, loungers and parasols are available around the beaches.

There are three outdoor freshwater pools: the main pool at the Great House, Grotto Pool by the beach and the quieter Arcade Pool. On land, you have an 18-hole golf course, eight tennis courts, professional tennis lessons and a golf simulator with 93 worldwide courses. Hiking, table tennis, beach volleyball, frisbee golf, corn hole, basketball and local cultural excursions keep the programme broad without requiring every hour to be booked. Families have a Kids Camp for children aged 4 to 12, running daily from 9am to 3pm, with beach and pool games, treasure hunts, crafts and other supervised activities.
