Kitesurfing Lanka is a beachfront resort for a stay built around open air, water and unhurried evenings rather than polished city-hotel routine. You have a garden, a private beach area, sun loungers and a terrace, while the resort's kitesurfing and other water activities keep the setting firmly pointed towards the coast.

English is available through the hotel's website, alongside French, German and Dutch, so those languages are clearly catered for in the way the resort presents itself. The property opened in 2010 and combines bungalows, villas and a tent option, giving you a choice between a simple base for two and more room for a family or a larger group.

The practical character is easy to grasp: breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered by the full-board formula, and the resort has a restaurant, a bar, a spa and outdoor space. After diving elsewhere in Kalpitiya, you can come back to a place where the beach, a meal and a chair are all part of the same plan.

The resort stands on Dutch Bay Road in Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka, with direct access to the beach. Kandakuliya Beach is about 0.1 mile away, while Kudawa Beach is around 0.7 mile by road and Kalpitiya Beach about 1.5 miles away. You are therefore choosing a coastal base rather than a town-centre address.

The surroundings are useful for a water-led holiday, with the resort's own beach area and several activities on site. Kalpitiya Railway Station is 4.7 miles away, Puttalam Railway Station is 28 miles away, and Bandaranaike International Airport is about 88 miles from the resort.

For a couple, the location keeps the daily logistics fairly simple: beach time does not require a separate outing, and the resort can arrange an airport shuttle or other shuttle service. A car-hire service is also available if you want to explore beyond Kandakuliya.

The accommodation ranges from compact bungalows to large villas. For two people, the Superior Bungalow has a king-size bed and a seating area, making it the straightforward choice when you want a proper room rather than a camp-style stay. Garden-view, lagoon, waterfront, beach-front and sea-view options shift the emphasis towards the outlook, so the setting you wake up to matters as much as the bed.

The Villa is the sensible family or group option, with two bathrooms and space for up to eight guests. Several other villas and bungalows accommodate smaller groups, while family rooms are available. The tent sleeps two in single beds and has no bathroom, which makes it a very different proposition from the bungalows and villas: appealing if you want the simplest outdoor-style base, less so if your idea of post-dive luxury involves a private shower.

Accommodation is fan-cooled and includes a seating area, with bathrooms supplied with toiletries. Daily housekeeping is available, and the resort also has luggage storage and lockers. The room categories include options for couples, families and groups, but the important choice is whether you want garden, lagoon, waterfront, beach or sea views when the day is done.

Full board is the main formula here, with breakfast, lunch and dinner served at the resort. Breakfast covers continental, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, Asian and American choices, as well as a buffet format, so there is room for different appetites before you head out for the day.

The Camp Restaurant sits in the garden and serves local food, moving from traditional rice and curry to fusion dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. It covers all three meals. The setting is relaxed and practical, particularly when you want dinner without leaving the resort or arranging another journey after a long day outside.

On the beach, Sunset Bar & Restaurant serves international food at lunch and dinner, with cocktails, wood-fired pizza and local seafood. There is also the Camp Bar, where the day can start with fresh coffee or a smoothie and finish with a cocktail or local beer. A snack bar and room service are also available, while the resort has barbecue facilities for a less formal meal.

The beach is the main piece of downtime, with loungers, parasols and a beach bar giving you somewhere to stop without turning relaxation into a timetable. A spa offers massage, and the wellness side also includes a fitness room and yoga classes. That is enough choice for the morning after a demanding dive, when stretching sounds sensible but a heroic training session does not.

On the water, you can go kitesurfing, kayaking or join a boat excursion, with equipment rental available. Fishing, snorkelling and other water-sport facilities are also offered, with some activities arranged at an additional charge. The resort also provides bicycle rental, cycling, darts, a games room and board games, so a windy or wet afternoon does not have to be spent staring at the ceiling.

If you are travelling with family, a kids' club and children's playground are available. The programme also reaches beyond the resort, with excursions linked to islands, waterfalls, markets and snorkelling, as well as cultural excursions and wildlife observation. In the evening, live music, performances, movie nights and other entertainment provide something to do once the light has gone.

The front desk operates around the clock. Check-in runs from 11:30 to 23:30, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time; check-out is from 01:00 to 10:00. That wide overnight check-out window may be useful for an early departure, while the arrival-time request is worth dealing with before you travel rather than leaving it to a last-minute message.

An airport shuttle and shuttle service are available, and car hire can be arranged at the resort. Private parking is available on site, with a reservation required. WiFi is available in the public areas, and luggage storage, currency exchange, private check-in and check-out and daily housekeeping are part of the practical setup.

Children of any age are welcome, although children aged 12 and over are charged as adults. Cots and extra beds are not available. Pets are allowed on request, and payment is made in cash; payment before arrival by bank transfer may be required, with the property providing the instructions after booking.

The resort gives old kitesurfing material a second life by turning it into distinctive pouches and bags. It is a small, concrete form of reuse with a direct link to the activities that define the place, rather than a vague promise about sustainability.
