La Perla Nera Diving

Located in the heart of Ustica, La Perla Nera Diving sits within the Mediterranean's first established Marine Park. Since 1986, this protected area has served as a vital biodiversity hotspot, benefiting from its volcanic origins and the nutrient-rich currents that sweep through the island.

The centre has been operating for over 20 years, established in 1999 by Roberto Fedele. It remains a cornerstone of the local diving community, offering a professional environment that caters to both recreational explorers and technical divers looking to push their limits in the Mediterranean.

The centre is managed by a PADI Course Director, the highest level of instructor qualification. This ensures that training, from initial certifications to professional development, is conducted with a high level of expertise and local knowledge of the Ustica seabed.

With over 30 years of experience in the industry, the team focuses on a professional yet friendly approach. They provide a comprehensive range of PADI programmes, ensuring that whether you are a student or a prospective professional, the instruction is tailored to your specific goals.

La Perla Nera Diving offers a complete spectrum of PADI training. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster levels.

For those looking to specialise, the centre provides a wide array of specialties including Wreck Diver, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, Underwater Navigator, and Dry Suit Diver. They also cater to the technical community with Nitrox and Trimix training, as well as advanced courses like the PADI Master Scuba Diver programme.

Professional divers can pursue a career through the Instructor Development Course (IDC), with pathways leading to Assistant Instructor, Open Water Scuba Instructor, and even IDC Staff Instructor. The centre also provides DAN Training and specialised courses like Search and Recovery Diver and Underwater Videographer.

The facility is well-equipped for both recreational and technical diving. For gas blending, the shop utilizes two COLTRI MCH 13 compressors, a COLTRI LP280 specifically for Nitrox, and a HASKEL MSB 9000 booster for technical diving requirements.

Beyond gas production, the centre operates a certified workshop for equipment servicing. This on-site technical capability is a significant advantage for divers relying on their own kit or those needing reliable maintenance during their stay.

The protected waters around Ustica are a haven for large pelagics and diverse fish populations. You will regularly encounter Tuna, Amberjack, and Great barracuda cruising the currents, alongside Common dentex, Sea bream, and Saddled seabream patrolling the reefs.

In the shallower areas and amongst the seagrass, the biodiversity is striking. Look for Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Damselfish, and Red chromis, as well as various species of Sea bream and Salema porgy. The rocky outcrops and crevices are home to Moray eels, Octopus, and various scorpionfish.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are abundant if you look closely. The seabed is populated by Seahorses, Spiny lobster, Shrimp, and various species of Starfish and Sea urchins. You may also spot various species of Octopus and small crustaceans tucked away in the reef structure.

The underwater landscape is defined by rich gorgonians and sea fans, alongside sea sponges, sea anemones, and various types of soft corals like Cassiopées. The presence of Posidonia oceanica meadows provides a vital habitat for many of the smaller species found in the area.

The marine environment of Ustica is shaped by Atlantic currents that bring a high volume of nutrients to the island, supporting a dense population of marine life. These currents can influence visibility and ease of movement depending on the specific site and time of day.
