Changi is the rare hub where waiting need not feel punitive. The catch is that Jewel’s waterfall is landside, beyond immigration.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Fine between T1, T2 and T3. T4 is a different matter.
- Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are linked by pedestrian walkways and a free Skytrain from 5 h to 2 h: four minutes between terminals, and under ten minutes gate to gate. One hour is enough for a normal connection among those three.
- ⚠️ Terminal 4 stands apart. You reach it only by free shuttle bus, taking 10 to 18 minutes and running roughly every eight minutes. Once T4 is involved, allow 1 h 30 to 2 h.
- Security screening happens at your departure gate, not at a central checkpoint. It is smoother, but you cannot get it out of the way early: keep your margin until the end.
- If you are travelling on separate tickets, collecting checked baggage and checking in again, allow 3 to 4 h.
2–5 hrs
The rare airport where a wait goes well without spending anything.
- Rest areas with reclining seats are plentiful, free and need no booking, spread through the transit halls.
- The themed gardens are airside. The Sunflower Garden in Terminal 2 is near the transit hotel; access is free, and it is the one place where you properly breathe.
- There is a free passenger cinema airside, near the Terminal 3 hotel. That removes two hours of waiting without opening your wallet.
- ⚠️ There are no free public showers. This is the sole Changi comfort that requires payment, through a lounge or a room.
5–10 hrs
The city tour is free, properly free. Miss it, though, and you do not get another go.
- VISA REQUIRED Changi and Singapore Airlines run a free guided Singapore tour for transit passengers. You need a layover of at least 5 h 30 and under 24 h, checked baggage through to your final destination, and permission to enter Singapore no visa for most European passports, with the online arrival card included.
- Each tour lasts around 2 h 30, and you may take only one per layover. Register at the airside counters: Terminal 2, level 2, near gate F50; or Terminal 3, level 2, near gates A1-A8. Arrive at least one hour before the tour departs.
- ⚠️ Do not clear immigration when you arrive. The tour is for transit passengers; once you have entered Singapore independently, you are no longer eligible.
- NO VISA if going out is not for you, the gardens, cinema and rest areas will cover half a day without crossing immigration.
10 hrs +
Sleep. An airside bed exists here, booked in blocks of hours.
- NO VISA transit hotels are airside in Terminals 1, 2 and 3, booked in blocks of a few hours. You cross neither customs nor immigration, then leave through the same gate.
- VISA REQUIRED the hotel linked to Terminal 3 is reached on foot from the landside hall. It is larger and more comfortable, and suits a layover long enough to justify a proper night.
- ⚠️ Changi has no airline-provided hotel programme, unlike some other hubs. Do not plan your layover around a complimentary night; it will be yours to arrange.

What catches travellers out
Jewel is not airside
This is Changi’s commonest mistake. The waterfall, indoor forest and shops are all landside. To reach them, you clear immigration and then go through security again on your return. On a three-hour layover, it does not work plenty of passengers learn this while looking for the waterfall in the transit hall.
There is no free shower
Nearly everything else is free here, so you may assume this is too. It is not: washing at Changi means a paid lounge or a transit-hotel room. Better to allow for it than spend an hour hunting for it.
Terminal 4 is separate
It connects to the other three only by shuttle bus. A connection involving it requires 1 h 30 to 2 h, even on a single ticket and the Skytrain will not take you there.
You lose the city tour if you enter on your own
Stay airside and register at one of the counters there. If you have cleared immigration on arrival, you are no longer a transit passenger and the door closes. Register first, then go out.
Why not wait it out in peace?

At Changi, a lounge does not sell comfort; you can find plenty of that for free elsewhere. It sells a shower, which is the only thing you cannot get without paying.
Be honest about the alternative first: it is unusually good. Reclining chairs, airside gardens, a cinema and free Wi-Fi will see you through eight hours without spending anything, which is not true at many airports.
There is one omission, and it matters: Changi has no free public showers. Every shower sits behind a lounge entrance or a transit-hotel room door.
That is the calculation. If you only want somewhere to sit, keep your money. If you are joining two long-haul flights and want to arrive washed, a lounge is the straightforward answer; you can buy entry individually, with no card, status or cabin-class requirement.
There is another argument for divers: your own socket for charging torches, housings and batteries, plus somewhere to put fifteen kilograms of cabin kit instead of keeping it on your knees.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three to five hours of quiet, including a shower.

- You cross neither immigration nor customs: your layover remains a layover, while your checked baggage continues without you.
- Similar hotels operate in Terminals 2 and 3. Choose the one in your departure terminal rather than the better-reviewed option; the Skytrain stops at 2 h.
A proper night, on foot from Terminal 3 but landside.
- It connects directly to the terminal halls: no taxi, no shuttle, even with your kit.
- Consider it only if your nationality permits entry and your layover can absorb two passages through immigration.

The diver’s reflex
At Changi, strip down your dive torch before check-in
The home airline is explicit on dive equipment: both the battery AND the bulb must be removed from dive torches and packed separately, with the battery travelling in cabin baggage. These are written rules, not local custom: deal with them the night before. A dismantled torch passes security without a word; an assembled one starts a conversation.
Your kit bag has a published maximum size
No checked bag above 32 kg is accepted, whatever you are prepared to pay: above that, you must divide it. Sports equipment is limited to 315 cm long, 75 wide and 80 high; once the length exceeds 240 cm, you must notify the airline at least five working days in advance. A long-fin bag or bulky video housing can get close.
Your power bank cannot be charged in flight
On flights departing Singapore, using and charging power banks is prohibited in flight, and you may carry a maximum of two in cabin baggage. Spare batteries follow the usual rule: never in checked baggage, terminals protected, unrestricted up to 100 Wh, no more than two between 100 and 160 Wh with prior approval, and refused above that.
