Sesimbra is the sort of place where the sea sets the timetable, and Hotel do Mar puts you on the hillside above it. You have a beachfront hotel, sea views from every room, pools for the in-between hours and a town close enough for a change of scenery without turning the evening into an expedition.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Portuguese, Spanish and French. That matters when you are discussing an early breakfast, a transfer or simply trying to explain that the room is full of damp towels and dive gear. The hotel was renovated in 2023 and has 120 rooms, with a lift, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi throughout.

You are in Sesimbra, Portugal, directly beside a golden-sand beach. Sesimbra Beach is around 10 metres away, with direct access, sun loungers, parasols, showers and a beach bar. Ouro Beach is about 0.2 miles away, while California Beach is roughly 0.5 miles away by road. The coast is doing most of the orientation work here; you can see the sea before you have found your room key.

For a stroll after dinner, Pelourinho de Sesimbra is about 0.5 miles away on foot, and Sesimbra Castle is around 1.2 miles away. You can also reach the entrance to Monumento Natural da Pedreira do Avelino in about 2.5 miles by road. Humberto Delgado Airport is around 27 miles away, or roughly a 30-minute drive according to the hotel's location information.

The practical choice is straightforward: choose a sea-view room when the view is part of why you are coming to Sesimbra, and choose the larger double or twin arrangement when two people need separate beds and a little more flexibility. That option also has a sofa bed, which makes it useful for a small family group. Single rooms keep things simple for solo trips, while the twin room suits two adults travelling together.

Every room has a private terrace overlooking the ocean. That gives you somewhere to sit with a drink, watch the light change over the water and decide whether the evening calls for dinner or an early night. Air conditioning helps take the edge off a warm, salty day, while the refrigerator is handy for keeping water cool. You also have a private bathroom with a shower or bath, toiletries and a hairdryer.

There is a wardrobe, a clothes rack, a television and a socket beside the bed. Daily housekeeping keeps the routine uncomplicated, and room service is available during limited hours. The private terraces and sea views are the real character of the rooms; the television can remain quietly unemployed.

Two restaurants give you a choice between Portuguese tradition indoors and seafood on the terrace. Lisboa serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with traditional Portuguese dishes in an air-conditioned interior. Breakfast is a buffet from 07:30, and the restaurant uses fresh, local ingredients. The dress code is smart casual, so you can arrive from the beach without pretending that formalwear belongs in your suitcase.

Marisqueira focuses on seafood and serves lunch and dinner on its terrace. The menu is à la carte, and Portuguese wines are part of the hotel dining offer. A separate bar, Mar Bar, sits by the beach and specialises in signature cocktails. It is the place for something cold with a sea view rather than another committee meeting about where to eat.

Half-board is available. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are catered for, and the hotel also has a snack bar. Drinks are not included with half-board, and room service runs to limited hours, so the restaurant and bar are the safer plan when you want a proper meal rather than a late improvisation.

The main outdoor pool is large, has a swim-up bar and sits alongside sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels. There is also an indoor pool, giving you another option when the Atlantic is doing its Atlantic thing. The beach is directly accessible, and the hotel offers water-sports facilities, snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing and boat excursions. Equipment rental is available for the water activities.

For land-based days, you can hire bicycles, join bike or walking tours, take part in a local-culture class or arrange excursions to Sintra and Cascais. Hiking and cycling are available, while table tennis offers a less ambitious answer to the question of what to do before dinner. Live music takes place at weekends, giving the evening a little structure without requiring you to sign up for organised fun.

Mar Spa covers 150 square metres and includes massages, facials, a sauna and a jacuzzi. The fitness centre and yoga classes are there for anyone who still wants to move after a day in the water. Everyone else can head for a lounger, which is also a perfectly respectable training plan.

You can arrive by car and use the hotel's private on-site parking, which includes an electric-vehicle charging station. Car hire is available, and the hotel operates an airport shuttle and a general shuttle service; arrange either with the hotel before travelling. Humberto Delgado Airport is the most relevant arrival point, around 27 miles away and about 30 minutes by car.

Check-in is available from 14:00, with check-out by 12:00. Guests checking in must be at least 18 and should bring photo identification. The front desk operates around the clock, with luggage storage, currency exchange, a concierge, wake-up calls and a safe at reception. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested.

The hotel is non-smoking throughout and welcomes children of all ages. Cots and extra beds are available on request, subject to the selected room and availability, while babysitting and a children's menu support family stays. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are also available. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and cash are accepted.

The hotel uses energy-efficient lighting and water-conservation measures, including rainwater collection. There is no grand speech attached to it: these are practical measures aimed at reducing water and energy use while the Atlantic remains right outside.
