Alicia Beach is closer still at around 350 metres, so you have more than one stretch of sand to investigate without arranging transport.

The setting also keeps the town within reach. Café Cubano is about 350 metres away, and Laguna Beach is around 4 km from the hotel. For a change of scenery, Lagunas Cabarete y Goleta National Monument lies roughly 13 km away. Gregorio Luperón International Airport is about 4 miles from the property, or roughly a nine-minute drive.

The rooms are all built around the same generous footprint, with air conditioning, tiled floors, a wardrobe, a private entrance and either a balcony or terrace. For two, the extra-large double bed is the obvious choice; the sea-view versions add the part you notice most when you open the door in the morning. If four people are sharing, the twin categories give you two double beds, while the deluxe twin uses two single beds and a sea view.

The balcony matters after a day in salt water. It gives you somewhere to sit while the air conditioning brings the room back to a sensible temperature, and the private bathroom includes a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. A flat-screen TV and free WiFi cover the low-energy part of the evening; the sea view covers the part where you simply sit there and watch the light change.

For couples, the sea-view double rooms are the natural pick. For a small group, the twin rooms offer the more workable sleeping arrangement, though the fixed room layout means you should choose the occupancy carefully when booking. Sosúa adds more choice when you want to eat or drink beyond the property. Café Cubano is about 350 metres away, and Santa Fe is around 2 miles from the hotel. In other words, local life is close enough to reach on foot, while the hotel still gives you a bar and snacks when the legs have had enough for one day.

The swimming pool is the main piece of post-dive machinery here, with views over the sea and pool or beach towels available. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and a sun terrace let you choose between shade and full Caribbean glare; the sensible option will depend on how much time you have already spent looking at the sun from below the surface.

There is an open-air bath and a public bath for a slower reset, plus a solarium and a fitness centre. Personal training is available, and the fitness facilities include changing rooms. You can also book massages, including full-body, back, neck, head, hand and foot treatments, as well as a couples massage. That last option is particularly useful when two people have returned from the water with equally unhelpful shoulders.

When you want to leave the sun loungers behind, the hotel offers a casino and access to activities such as walking tours and tours about local culture. Snorkelling, canoeing, windsurfing, horse riding and fishing are available off site, while temporary art galleries provide another reason to wander beyond the property.

Gregorio Luperón International Airport is about 4 miles away, and an airport shuttle is available through the hotel. A shuttle service, car hire, a tour desk, concierge service, currency exchange and luggage storage are also available, which is useful when your flight and your room do not run to the same timetable.
