Le Zahir de l’île Iranja is a six-room lodge on Nosy Iranja, built beside a fishing village and facing the white sandbar that joins two islands. The lodge opened in 2012 and keeps its style close to the local fishermen’s bungalows, with modern comfort added where it matters: a proper bathroom, hot water, electricity, WiFi and a covered veranda.

This is a place for a slower sort of diving trip. You have the sea in front of you, mangroves behind you and the kind of setting where the day is measured by the tide, the boat and the next meal. Couples can keep things simple; families have larger rooms and practical support such as babysitting services. There is also a concierge for arranging the useful bits around your stay.

Nosy Iranja lies 27 miles south of Nosy Be, Madagascar, surrounded by sea and positioned beside the mangroves, directly opposite the famous white sandbar. The lodge has direct access to a white-sand beach, so the swimwear-to-water transition is pleasingly short. Tides change the shape of the sandbar; the island stays where it is, which is helpful.

Getting there is part of the geography rather than a minor transfer detail. Boats leave from Le Zahir’s beach at Madirokely at 08:30 and take about 90 minutes to reach Iranja, with the return planned for around 15:00. Fascene Airport is 12 miles away by road from the Madirokely departure point. Nearby Nosy Be options include Mount Passot, 14 miles away by road, and Lokobe Reserve, 9 miles away by road.

Choose the room according to how much space your party needs, not according to the promise of a grand category name. The Deluxe Room suits a couple wanting a super-king bed, private bathroom and balcony. For three, the sea-view triple room adds a single bed; for a family or two couples travelling together, the family room gives you the most useful amount of room and sea views.

The bungalows are individually decorated with local craftwork and each has a covered veranda, a double bed with mosquito net and a private bathroom with shower and hot water. Ground-floor units make arrival and departure easier, particularly when you are carrying luggage over from the boat. Wardrobes, a dressing area, a desk and a socket beside the bed cover the unglamorous things you actually notice once the salt has dried on your skin.

A balcony or veranda gives you somewhere to sit with a view, while the mosquito net is a sensible companion for the night. Rooms are non-smoking and daily housekeeping is available. WiFi reaches all areas, but the real reason to book here is the relationship between room and landscape: step outside and the sea is doing most of the decorating.

The restaurant works with seafood, fresh fish and Mediterranean specialities, served on the beach with your feet in the sand and the white sandbar in view. The kitchen also takes dietary requirements into account, with special-diet menus available on request. Breakfast covers continental, Italian and vegetarian choices, which is enough range to get a diving morning started without turning breakfast into a conference.

The Tiki Bar is the practical evening and excursion stop: signature cocktails, beer, soft drinks and espresso, alongside Mediterranean snacks and pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven. There is a sea-facing area for sitting down, and a snack bar when a full meal is more ambition than appetite. The lodge offers half-board and full-board options; drinks are separate from those meal plans, apart from water included with certain packages.

The restaurant and bar keep the food close to the setting rather than trying to disguise it. Expect fish, sand, sea air and a wood-fired pizza when the table wants something less aquatic. Room service is not available, so meals happen where the lodge has placed them: at the table, at the bar or on the beach.

The beach is the main piece of kit here, and it does not need charging. You can take a walking tour, go hiking, join a local-culture tour or book an excursion by boat. Snorkelling, fishing and cruises add water-based options for the hours when you are not diving, while quad biking and horse riding offer a change from fins and a dive bag.

There is room for quieter afternoons as well. Sun umbrellas, outdoor furniture, the garden and the sea-facing terrace give you places to sit without being recruited into an activity. A massage is available when your shoulders have had enough of carrying wet gear, although this is not a spa resort with a treatment menu to study over breakfast.

Evenings can include live music or a performance, evening entertainment, live sport broadcasts, themed dinner nights and a happy hour. The lodge also welcomes children, with family rooms, children’s meals and child services available. In other words, you can spend the non-diving day exploring, fishing or doing absolutely nothing useful; all three are respectable holiday choices.

A boat is required to reach the lodge. The crossing from Le Zahir’s beach at Madirokely is scheduled for 08:30 and takes about 90 minutes; the return from Iranja is planned for around 15:00. An airport shuttle is available from Fascene Airport, and boat or shuttle arrangements should be organised with the lodge before you travel. The property can also arrange a shuttle service, with a tour desk and concierge on hand for local planning.

Check-in runs from 10:30 to 12:00, and check-out from 10:00 to 11:00. You need to give the lodge your expected arrival time in advance, which matters when the arrival route involves a boat rather than simply turning up at the front door. Cash is an accepted payment method, and payment before arrival by bank transfer forms part of the booking process.

Free WiFi is available throughout the lodge. There is a 24-hour reception, lockers, currency exchange, a safety deposit box, 24-hour security and daily housekeeping. Laundry is available, and pets are not allowed. At certain times of year, a minimum stay of five consecutive nights applies, so check the conditions attached to your chosen dates before building the rest of the itinerary around them.

Le Zahir de l’île Iranja is run as an eco-solidarity project focused on protecting the island and supporting the civil development of the village. The lodge was built in keeping with the fishermen’s bungalow style, using a local character rather than importing a polished resort template from somewhere else.

Solar panels provide the energy, while the setting itself does some of the heavy lifting: sea around you, mangroves at the edge of the property and a deliberate emphasis on silence. This is not presented as a lecture to attend; it is the practical shape of the place you book, where the landscape remains part of the stay rather than a backdrop behind the buildings.
