Costa Hotel

A hotel for divers who do not need every minute organised around the water. Costa Hotel gives you air-conditioned rooms, a restaurant, a bar, a pool and a wellness centre, so you can come back from the coast, shower, eat and decide whether the evening needs another outing or simply a chair.

The hotel has 92 rooms and was renovated in 2023. Families are welcome, couples have room for a quieter stay, and the multilingual team speaks Italian, English, German and French. English is spoken by the hotel team, so you can sort out the practical details without relying on hand gestures or a heroic attempt at Italian.

Costa Hotel is in Pompei, Italy, close to the coast and the area's archaeological sites. A sandy beach is 50 metres away, with sun loungers, parasols and a beach bar. That gives you a straightforward option for a non-diving morning, although the hotel is not a beach resort cut off from everything else: Pompeii's Forum is about 1.5 miles away.

The surrounding area also gives you a few practical alternatives when the hotel kitchen is not calling your name. Pizzeria Sud Ovest and Salumeria d'Amora are within a short walk, while Miss Sushi is about 1,800 feet away. Ponte Persica railway station is around 200 feet away, and Moregine station is roughly 0.5 miles away, useful for exploring without turning every excursion into a parking exercise.

Naples International Airport is roughly 17 miles away by road. Ercolano's ruins are about 10 miles away, while Vesuvius and Monte Somma are within reach for a day on land.

The rooms are set up for recovery rather than theatrical arrival scenes: air conditioning for hot coastal days, soundproofing for a quieter night, parquet flooring, a private bathroom and a balcony. There is also a minibar, television, desk and free WiFi, which covers the useful details when you need cold water, a place to deal with bookings or a quiet hour before dinner.

For two, the Classic Double Room keeps things simple, while the Superior Double Room gives you more elbow room. If you are travelling as a family or with a small group, the triple room adds a single bed and the quadruple option uses a bunk bed alongside the large bed. The latter is practical rather than romantic; nobody books a bunk bed for its poetry.

Daily housekeeping, towels, toiletries, a shower and a hairdryer are included. Breakfast in the room and room service are available, and the 24-hour room service is handy when your appetite arrives later than the restaurant timetable. Cots can be requested for younger children, while extra beds are not available.

Ristorante Bellavista handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a Mediterranean menu built around fresh local produce and a terrace overlooking the sea. The dress code is relaxed, which is exactly what your shoulders will want after a day in kit. Breakfast is a buffet from 07:00, with continental, Italian, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices.

Half-board is available, and lunch or dinner can be added to your booking. Drinks are not included, so keep that small but important detail in mind before the first round. Vegetarian and gluten-free dishes can be prepared on request, giving you something more useful than a single token salad.

There are two bars. Bar Centrale is the lobby bar, focused on cocktails and an easy sit-down drink; the Pool Bar stays beside the outdoor pool with cocktails and snacks. A snack bar, coffee house and minibar cover the less formal moments, although continuous snacking is not the arrangement here. A packed lunch is available for days spent away from the hotel.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place to put the afternoon on hold, with a built-in bar close enough that you do not need to go far for a drink. The sun terrace, garden and outdoor seating give you several places to sit, while the nearby sandy beach adds a change of surface from pool tiles to coastline.

For a slower recovery session, the 200-square-metre Wellness Center offers massages, facial treatments, a sauna and a jacuzzi. There is also a gym and yoga, if your idea of rest includes asking more of your legs after the dive ladder. The solarium is another option for a quiet spell in the sun.

When staying still loses its appeal, the hotel can arrange boat excursions and offers snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. On land, you can hire a bicycle, go hiking, take a cooking class or book cultural excursions to Pompeii, Vesuvius, Sorrento and Capri. Musical evenings and shows take place in high season, while babysitting and a children's menu make the hotel workable for families travelling with younger non-divers.

A 24-hour front desk, concierge, tour desk, luggage storage and express check-in and check-out keep the arrival mechanics fairly manageable. Check-in runs from 14:00 to 21:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 11:00. Airport transfers and shuttle services are available to arrange with the hotel, and car hire can also be organised.

Private parking is available on site, and the hotel has a lift, accessible parking and rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility on request. WiFi is free throughout the property. The hotel also offers laundry, ironing and dry-cleaning services, a reception safe, medical assistance on request and meeting facilities. Pets are welcome on request, and smoking is permitted in designated areas.
