Hotel Monte Rosa

Family-run since the beginning of the 20th century, this is a town hotel with a long local history rather than a purpose-built beach resort. You stay in the centre of Chiavari, close to the coast, with the sort of address that lets you step out for a coffee, dinner or an evening stroll without planning an expedition. The hotel was renovated in 2023 and has 86 rooms.

English, Italian, German and French are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with reception, dinner arrangements and practical questions in the language that suits you. That matters when you are tired, sun-warmed and trying to remember where you left the room key. The atmosphere is more Riviera town house than all-day resort: central, established and suited to divers who want the sea nearby but also want a real town around them.

Via Vittorio Emanuele places you in the heart of Chiavari, in Italy, within the historic centre and close to the pedestrian area and its old arcades. The city centre is on your doorstep, with cafés, bars and restaurants close enough for an unhurried walk. Snaporaz Caff is about 300 feet away, while Teleria Rocca Caffe and Enoteca Bisson are also within easy reach.

Chiavari beach is a short walk from the hotel, with golden sand, loungers and parasols. Libera Beach is about 0.8 miles away on foot, and Lavagna Beach about 1.6 miles. If you prefer to move along the coast by train, Chiavari station is roughly 0.3 miles away via the pedestrian streets and arcades; Lavagna station is about 1.7 miles away.

You can also build days away from the water. Casa Carbone and Torre del Borgo are around 1.4 miles away, while Portofino, the Cinque Terre and Genoa are among the excursions the hotel can arrange or help you organise. Punta Manara, a natural area, is about 7 miles away.

The room choice is broad enough to match different kinds of diving trip. A Single Room keeps things simple if you are travelling alone, while the Double or Twin Room suits a couple who would rather spend the evening in the town than in a large suite. For three guests, the Superior or Deluxe Double or Twin rooms give you more room to manoeuvre; the Family Room is the practical choice when four people and their luggage need to coexist without performing a daily packing exercise.

The Junior Suite is the room to consider when you want a separate step up in space for a longer stay or a couple who like having room to spread out. Every room has air conditioning, furniture, a minibar and free Wi-Fi. That gives you somewhere cool to recover from warm, salty hours outside, plus cold drinks within reach when the legs have stopped negotiating. A wardrobe, desk, electric kettle, flat-screen television and satellite channels cover the less glamorous but genuinely useful parts of an evening. Daily housekeeping, room service and luggage storage are also available.

Breakfast is included and served as a buffet from 07:00, with continental, Italian and gluten-free choices. That gives you a proper start before heading out, although an early boat departure is worth discussing with the hotel rather than assuming the buffet will be waiting at dawn. Two restaurants are part of the hotel’s dining offer. Ristorante Monte Rosa is the named address, serving lunch and dinner indoors with traditional Ligurian cooking, fresh local ingredients and a casual dress code. Lunch runs from 12:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 19:30 to 22:00, with the restaurant open from March to October and during the Christmas holidays. Expect the food to lean towards the region, not towards a generic international buffet.

The American Bar sits in the lobby and focuses on cocktails and drinks, while a coffee house, bar, snack bar and minibar cover the shorter missions between meals. Limited-hours room service is available. Special-diet menus can be arranged on request, and children’s meals are available.

The easiest non-diving plan is to take one of the free bicycles available from reception and explore Chiavari at your own pace. Cycling, guided bike tours, walking tours and hikes are available, with local-culture tours, temporary art galleries and themed dinner nights adding a little structure when simply following the next street starts to feel too demanding. Horse riding is available away from the property.

Back at the hotel, you can use the fitness centre, fitness classes and personal-trainer service if your idea of a rest day still involves exertion. For a less ambitious afternoon, the sun terrace, outdoor furniture, sun loungers, umbrellas and solarium offer somewhere to sit down and let the day lose momentum. That is often the point at which the post-dive plan becomes more realistic.

Massage services include back, neck, foot, head, hand and full-body treatments. There is also a hot tub or Jacuzzi and an open-air bath. Couples can divide the afternoon between a walk through town and a treatment, while board games and puzzles give families an uncomplicated indoor option.

Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is about 19 miles from the hotel, with the road journey taking around 39 minutes. An airport shuttle is available on request, and a shuttle service can also be arranged. If you are arriving by rail, Chiavari station is around a ten-minute walk through the pedestrian area and ancient arcades.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 23:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested. You have a 24-hour front desk, express and private check-in or check-out, concierge service, a tour desk and luggage storage, which is useful when your travel day does not line up neatly with room access.

Private parking is available on site with reservation, including valet parking. The hotel also has a lift, accessible upper floors, wheelchair access and adapted bathroom features. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Pets are allowed on request, with restrictions in communal rooms and a requirement that they are not left unattended in guest rooms.
