Secca del Semaforo, Elba: granite seamount diving

The Secca del Semaforo is a prominent submerged pinnacle, located offshore in the Golfo di Viticcio, roughly 300 meters from the coast. Your descent begins over open water, aiming for the seamount's summit, a granite hump that breaks the surface of the deep. The top of this seamount ranges from 28 to 38 meters, depending on where you hit it, forming a distinct plateau that provides a reference point before the surrounding depths.

From this plateau, the seamount walls drop steeply. You'll trace the contours of the granite, which is deeply fissured with small openings and ledges. As you move deeper, the character of the site changes, revealing vibrant red gorgonian fans that cling to the rock faces. These gorgonian gardens, found on the deeper sections of the walls, stand out against the granite, indicating a rich, undisturbed environment.

The dive profile here typically involves a descent along these steep walls, exploring the cracks and crevices where life finds refuge. You'll find lobsters and spider crabs nestled into these rocky features, often larger than what you might encounter in shallower areas. Scorpionfish are also residents, blending in with the texture of the granite, so a slow, observant pace is rewarded.

As you continue your exploration, keep an eye out for larger crustaceans. Conger eels and moray eels inhabit the deeper crevices and larger openings in the rock face, using the natural topology for shelter. The presence of these larger predators and their prey indicates a healthy ecosystem supported by the varied depths and protection offered by the seamount's structure.

The seamount eventually gives way to a sandy bottom at depths between 55 and 58 meters. While the main focus remains on the seamount's structure, the transition zone can offer additional encounters. Yellow sponges encrust parts of the deeper walls, adding another layer of colour and texture to the marine landscape, complementing the red gorgonians.
