A sensible arrangement when your main ambition is to exchange fins for sandals without making a project of it.

The hotel has direct access to Biodola Beach, a golden-sand beach stretching for around 600 metres. Sun loungers, parasols and a beach bar keep the practical business of spending the day by the water pleasantly simple.

You are also within reach of several other beaches: Spiaggia di Scaglieri is roughly 1,200 feet away by road, while Spiaggia del Forno is about 0.7 miles away. The Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano is around 1.4 miles away, and Portoferraio’s harbour is about a ten-minute drive. For a change of scenery, the historic sites around Portoferraio, including Villa dei Mulini and the Medicean Fortresses, are between roughly 3 and 3.5 miles away.

The useful distinction here is not the name on the door but the amount of room you want around yourself. A sea-view double room keeps things straightforward for two, with a super-king-size bed in the standard option; the larger King Room gives you more breathing space without turning a short stay into a family operation. Both are aimed squarely at couples who want the view without needing several rooms to organise a suitcase and a dive bag.

For families or friends travelling together, the one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites give you a more workable layout. The Prestige Suite with Private Pool and the Presidential Suite are the larger choices, with three bathrooms each; that is the sort of detail that prevents a perfectly good holiday from being derailed by a queue for the shower. Every room and suite has a furnished balcony or patio with sea views, air conditioning, heating and a flat-screen TV.

The property is non-smoking and Wi-Fi is available throughout. Children of any age are welcome, although children aged 16 and over are charged as adults, and extra beds are not available; cots depend on the accommodation selected. Choose the room category with care if you are travelling as a group, rather than assuming that a sofa will magically become a bed.

Ristorante Belvedere handles the main meals, from breakfast through to dinner. The cooking is Mediterranean, with fresh local ingredients, and the setting is a terrace with a panoramic sea view. Breakfast is a buffet served from 07:00, with continental, Italian, vegetarian and gluten-free choices; lunch runs from 12:30 to 14:30, and dinner from 19:30 to 22:00. The dress code is casual, which is welcome news when your day has involved salt, sun and a wetsuit.

The standard arrangement is half-board. A single Bar Piscina serves cocktails beside the outdoor pool, so you can move from the water to something cold without changing the subject. Room service is available between 12:00 and 22:00, useful when you would rather stay on your balcony than put on proper clothes for lunch. There is also a restaurant and a bar on site, with Maitù and Pizzeria di Pini roughly 600 and 900 feet away by road if you want to eat elsewhere.

The main outdoor option is a large, unheated pool with a bar built into it. Pool and beach towels are available, as are sun loungers and beach chairs, while the direct route to Biodola Beach gives you a second place to spend the afternoon without getting into a car. Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, boat excursions and equipment hire are available on site, giving you ways to stay on the water without turning every hour into another organised commitment.

For a quieter reset, the 150-square-metre Wellness Center offers massages, facial treatments, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. A fitness centre and yoga classes cover the more energetic end of recovery. You can also choose cycling, hiking or cultural excursions, including a visit to Portoferraio and boat trips around Elba. Golf is available within 3 miles, and a tennis court is available off site.

Families have a playground, a children’s menu and babysitting. Regular music evenings and shows add some life after dinner, although the property also gives you a garden, terrace and enough sea to look at when entertainment is the last thing on your list.

Private parking is available on site without reservation, including an electric-vehicle charging station. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and you have a 24-hour reception, luggage storage, concierge service, car hire, laundry and dry-cleaning. An airport shuttle and other shuttle services are available to arrange directly with the hotel. Marina di Campo Airport is around 3 miles away, while Portoferraio harbour is about ten minutes by car.
