Blu Salento Village

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian and German, so you can deal with the practicalities without resorting to hand signals worthy of a difficult entry. Blu Salento Village is a resort built around easy days by the coast, with a private beach area, two outdoor pools, family facilities and enough room to spread out after time in the water.

The mood is geared to both couples and families. Daytime and evening entertainment runs at set times for adults and children, while live music gives the evening a little shape once dinner is over. You can keep things simple: swim, eat, sit outside, and decide later whether doing absolutely nothing counts as an activity.

The resort is in Sant'Isidoro, Italy, on the coast near Nardò. The sea is around 500 metres away, although the property also has direct access to its own sandy beach, with sun loungers, parasols and a beach bar. In other words, you have a choice between the resort's facilities and the proper seaside version of sitting down.

Sant'Isidoro's centre is about 0.3 miles away, while Porto Cesareo is around 3 miles from the resort. That gives you a small local base close by and a larger coastal town within easy reach by car. Nardò is about 5 km away, and Gallipoli is 12 miles away.

For a change of scenery, the Scalo di Furno Archaeological Site is around 4.5 miles away. Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano Regional Nature Park is about 6 miles away, with Torre Uluzzo at roughly the same distance. The resort has free private parking, which is useful here, although spaces are limited and cannot be reserved.

The rooms use a classic Mediterranean style and work in the practical way a coastal room should: air conditioning for the return from a hot, salty day, a minibar for keeping drinks cool, and a private bathroom with shower, bidet, toiletries and hairdryer. There is also a wardrobe, satellite TV and a telephone. Nothing theatrical; just the things you want to find when your shoulders have had enough of carrying kit.

For two, choose a double or twin room according to how firmly you and your companion feel about sharing a bed. Garden-view rooms keep the outlook focused on the grounds rather than the sea, which may suit you if you prefer a calmer, more contained view when the curtains open. The triple and family-oriented layouts make more sense when a third or fourth bed matters more than having acres of floor space.

The family rooms are the useful choice for a group travelling with children, with the resort also providing a children's pool, kids' meals, an outdoor play area and a kids' club for ages 4 to 12. Children of any age are welcome, and cots can be requested for babies, while extra beds are not available. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, so you can send the day's photographs without having to leave the room in search of a signal.

Meals are served buffet-style, with breakfast, lunch and dinner covered by the main dining setup. Ristorante Bellavista works with Mediterranean cooking and fresh local ingredients, and its terrace gives you a sea view while you eat. At lunch and dinner, freshly grilled fish and meat provide something more substantial than the usual post-swim nibble.

When pizza is the sensible answer, Pizzeria La Piazzetta serves wood-fired pizzas and other Italian specialities in the open air. It covers lunch and dinner, so you have an alternative to the main buffet without needing to turn the evening into a logistical exercise. The board basis is half-board, and house wine and water are included with half-board meals.

There are two bars. Bar Centrale is the lobby bar, with cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks; the Pool Bar adds cocktails, drinks and snacks beside the water. That gives you somewhere for the first drink without leaving the resort, and somewhere else when the pool has won the argument.

The main outdoor pool is the obvious post-dive recovery zone, with a swim-up bar built into it and space to cool off without going anywhere. A separate shallow pool is designed for young children. Both are unheated, so they are best treated as warm-weather pools rather than guaranteed all-season options.

Blu Spa gives you a quieter way to spend the afternoon, with massages, facials, body wraps, a sauna and a hammam. The resort also has a gym and a yoga studio, although after a full day in the sea, a gentle stretch may be more realistic than a heroic workout. The garden and beach provide the less structured alternatives, with loungers and parasols on the sand.

If sitting still is not yet in your plans, you can use the tennis court, play volleyball or five-a-side football, and take part in cycling, hiking and cultural excursions. Water-based options include snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat excursions, with equipment hire available. Lecce, Otranto and Gallipoli are among the excursions offered, while evening entertainment includes live music.

Brindisi–Salento Airport is about 45 minutes away by car. An airport shuttle is available and can be arranged with the hotel; car hire is also available, and free private parking is provided on site. If you are travelling by train, Nardò station is around 8 miles away by road and Nardò Centrale around 9 miles.

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 10:00. The front desk operates around the clock, with a wake-up service, luggage storage, concierge and tour desk available for the useful jobs that appear between flights, meals and excursions. Laundry and dry-cleaning services are also available.

You can pay with cash, Visa or Mastercard. A safe is available at reception, and the rooms are non-smoking. Guests under 18 must check in with a parent or official guardian, while pets are not allowed. The resort is a sensible fit if you want beach access and on-site facilities rather than a small town-centre address.
