Oroverde

Eight rooms, a restaurant, a garden threaded with vines and olive trees, and the sea opening out towards Capo Noli: Hotel OroVerde is a compact place rather than a sprawling resort. You are staying above Bergeggi, on the Ligurian Riviera, with private balconies and sea views built into the shape of the hotel.

The mood is quiet and informal. You can have breakfast on site, return to an air-conditioned room with a private bathroom, or settle beside the pool while the rest of the day sorts itself out. There is also a shared lounge and a bar, so you do not have to leave the property simply because you fancy a drink or somewhere to sit.

That makes Oroverde a sensible choice if you want diving to be part of the holiday without turning the hotel into a camp dedicated to it. The nearby diving centres are separate, while the hotel gives you a proper evening base: food, a terrace, a garden and somewhere to sleep without a timetable pinned to the wall.

The address is in Bergeggi, Italy, on Strada Comunale alla Gola di S. Elena, above the coast among hills and overlooking the sea. This is not a hotel directly on the beach. Spiaggia di Bergeggi is about 0.8 miles away on foot, with the journey taking around 17 minutes; by car, the route is about 2.6 miles.

Punta Prodani beach is about 1.1 miles away on foot, while Spiaggia Libera Spotorno is about 1.2 miles away. The coastline is therefore close, but you should expect a walk or a short drive rather than a few steps from your room to the water. A private outdoor pool covers the easier post-dive dip.

The protected marine area around Isola di Bergeggi is about 0.8 miles away. For a change of scenery on land, the Spotorno-Noli railway station is about 2.4 miles away, and Savona's Complesso Monumentale del Priamar is about 4.8 miles away. Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is roughly 30 miles by road, around a 40-minute drive.

Every room has the basics that matter when you come back tired, salty and not especially interested in decorative cleverness: air conditioning, a private bathroom, free WiFi, a desk, a wardrobe and a private balcony. The practical details are well aimed at a diving day. Soundproof rooms and soundproofing should help keep the night separate from the corridor and neighbouring rooms, while air conditioning matters when you have spent hours in warm water. A mosquito net, heating, a drying rack for clothing and a clothes rack are also available. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while you concentrate on the next dive rather than yesterday's kit and wet clothes.

The on-site Ristorante serves lunch and dinner on a terrace, with cooking rooted in Ligurian and Mediterranean traditions. Local and regional ingredients are used in dishes that reinterpret those traditions with a more modern hand. In plain terms, this is the useful sort of restaurant to have upstairs: you can eat properly without organising another trip after a day in the water.

Breakfast is included and served as an Italian buffet. Fresh pastries, pancakes, cheese and fruit make it more substantial than a coffee-and-biscuit start, while breakfast in the room is also available if an early departure has made socialising before coffee an unreasonable proposal.

Wine and champagne are available too, although this is a restaurant-led hotel rather than a place built around a long list of bars or continuous snacking.

The central afternoon option is the outdoor hydromassage pool, set between greenery and the blue of the sea, with a sun terrace and sun loungers. It is the sort of arrangement that suits the gap between returning from the coast and sitting down for dinner: a gentle soak, a view, and no urgent reason to move.

The wellness facilities include a hot tub, steam room, sauna, spa facilities, a relaxation lounge, a massage chair and a fitness room. The spa and wellness centre is available as a separate service. After diving, the hot tub and relaxation areas are the obvious draws; the fitness room is there for anyone who regards a day off as an administrative error.

When you want to leave the property, walking tours, bike tours and bicycle hire are available. Hiking and cycling can be arranged away from the hotel, billiards offers a lower-effort option indoors, and a golf course lies within about 3 miles. The Area Marina Protetta Isola di Bergeggi is also close by for a land-based look at the coast you have been diving around.

Check-in runs from 12:30 to 20:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 08:00 to 10:30, which may suit an early start but leaves little room for a leisurely final morning. Private check-in and check-out are available, as is luggage storage.

Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is about 30 miles away by road, with a drive of around 40 minutes. Cuneo International Airport is roughly 61 miles away by road, with a drive of around 1 hour 13 minutes.
